Nick's South East Asia Volunteer project

Donation protected
Hey guys!!!

I’m Nick, and as most of you know I have just finished my undergrad degree in Psychology at the University of Chichester. Although I am still unsure of the career path I want to pursue with my degree, I do know my passion in life is to help others and I aim to have positive effects on people’s lives… even if that’s just putting a smile on someone’s face on a shitty day.

Therefore, I have a been accepted on an amazing opportunity with the organisation, “Plan my gap year” to go to South East Asia and volunteer in Vietnam, Cambodia and Bali for 3 months, starting this September!! This will involve working in each country for 4 weeks at a time. I have decided to volunteer at a local NGO in Vietnam where I will put the skills I have gained throughout my time at university into practice. Within this project, I will be undertaking issues such as health and human rights. This will be a great way to gain work experience and learn about core economic, educational, environmental and social issues in the developing world. I will gain an understanding of and make an impact on social development on a more strategic level. From there, I will travel down to Cambodia, where I will work in an orphanage with children ranging from 4 – 20 years old.  It’s been said that approximately 1 in 10 young people under the age of 18 are orphans and some of these children are forced to beg, or even enter the Cambodian child sex trade!! As heart-breaking as it will be, this will be the programme I believe I will enjoy the most. Having the opportunity to make a slight difference in these children’s life is all I aspire for. Within this setting, I will play games, sports, teach English and also help staff with maintenance such as washing clothes or helping to prepare food. Following on from there I will end my time volunteering in Bali where I will be teaching English. In preparation for this programme, I will be completing an international accredited online TEFL course over the summer. As I will be teaching, I want to ensure I will have the correct amount of knowledge and broaden my experience to benefit the children who I will teach in the classroom settings.

I know this will be a huge challenge and a lot of hard work, but I do know it’ll be worth every bit of it. Please support me in helping to change and improve lives as well as in changing my own: As this trip is beginning at the end of this summer, I will be self- funding towards the course fees, transport, accommodation and other expenses, so I will be working as a teaching assistant, working in my local pub and doing the occasional babysitting job. Your financial support will also help go towards these expenses.

I will be hosting a pub quiz in the bar I work at, The Horse and Groom, on the 7th June at 7.30pm in Chichester. It will be a fun-filled eve with raffle prizes etc. Along with that, I will be making my way back to my hometown in Cornwall and also hosting a pub quiz in the bar I work at down there, at Moustache Jacks. The pub quiz will start at 9.30pm on Friday 14th June and will be £3 a go! Id absolutely love for everyone to make it. There will be prizes for the winning team and also a raffle!! Plus, a decent excuse to get pissed! More details for both quizzes will be on my Facebook page as well as the pubs pages!

My fitness freak brother, Martin, has agreed to partner up with me and walk 20 miles of the South coast. We will be starting from Portloe (Truro) making our way on the coastal paths to Charlestown (St Austell) with the aim of completing our walk within 8 hours. We will then be met by family and friends for a well -deserved beer!! A date hasn’t been set yet, but the route is planned and ready. Dates will be confirmed.

Every donation means a lot to me...and I can’t THANK YOU all enough for supporting me and contributing to my dreams of helping others! I promise I will do my utmost to bring joy and love to those who I will come into contact with. I will also update you all on my journey!! Thank you so much! All my love,

Nick xx
