Nia's Study Abroad in Cape Town

Donation protected
Hey, y'all! My name is Nia Daughtry, and I am a junior at Towson University. I am currently studying Sociology, Anthropology, and Psychology.

I was recommended for, and accepted into, the Global Mentors Program in Cape Town, South Africa, and I would greatly appreciate your help in pursuing this opportunity!

The costs of the trip are as follows:

$300 non-refundable enrollment fee to secure my spot in the program (to be submitted by 5 PM EST Monday 3/27); this is also a portion of the $1550 program fee.

$1250 to cover the remainder of the program fee (to be paid within 90 days of acceptance notification).

$2600 to cover the cost of airfare.

$250 for Travel Insurance.

$600 for miscellaneous expenses associated with travel (i.e. food and lodging during potential layovers).

The Global Mentors Program provides volunteers with the opportunity to interact with and help students in communities with limited educational resources. In addition to helping students, volunteers have the opportunity to enrich themselves by gaining exposure to and immersing themselves into a new culture. Volunteers also get the chance to interact with each other, discuss their personal teaching styles, and learn new techniques and gain resources that they can carry home with them.

My goal in life is to open a community center. Actually, I hope to open several. Growing up in Baltimore City Schools, and working in both Baltimore City and County Schools, opened my eyes to the disparities in the quality of education. Students in low-income communities are often viewed as under performing and misbehaving, when the truth is that they are underserved and written off. I aim to open several community support centers that will provide free academic services for students in need, as well as facilitating programs to expose students to the arts, various trades, and the college preparatory process. Addtionally, I aim to provide services that support other members of the community by offering programs such as GED courses, career/interview coaching, financial literacy, and family counseling.

Participating in the Global Mentors Program would give me the opportunity to not only serve in a different community, but it would also enable me to learn more about the quality of education outside of the States, what other educators and mentors from around the world do to improve interactions with their students and communities (and how I can apply these techniques to my own approach), and the chance to experience a new culture.

It would mean the world to me to be able to engage in this experience, and any donations/well wishes received would be much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

P.S.
I know the time/deadlines for the payment schedule is crazy, but I will include the link to the application page below so that you know this is legitimate.
