Ellen, Sophie and I (Megan) are Student Paediatric Nurses who met when we all started University of Surrey to study Children's nursing. Due to the COVID-19 situation we are now unable to go to Zambia in August 2020 and we have been able to reschedule our trip to September 2021 when we have finished our nursing degree. This trip is to give us the opportunity to go and experience children's nursing in the lovely Zambia, Lusaka for 4 weeks. We are travelling with the company Work the World who has worked with our University for many years. We will be volunteering in the local hospital, supporting and observing what it is like to be a nurse in a different cultural environment where they do not have the facilities and resources the same as we do in the UK. This will show us how important the NHS is to the UK. Whilst we are volunteering in the paediatric hospital, we will be working in all different departments, where we will be exposed to illnesses and conditions that we will potentially never see in the UK in our whole career. Examples we may see include, malnutrition, paediatric HIV and cervical cancer, septic open wounds, leptospirosis and also seeing patients who are suffering from malaria, on of the most common communicable diseases in the country . We also have the opportunity to spend a week with a local family from the villages of Zambia, where we will live exactly how they do, whilst helping around the village using our nursing knowledge in the clinics around. On our days off from the hospital we hope to travel around Zambia exploring their culture and seeing their way of life. Unfortunately, it is going to cost us which is due to it not being funded, therefore we have set up this page in order to get as much support and help as possible to be able experience this amazing opportunity!
