New Way Nonviolence Education

Our goal at New Way Nonviolence is real simple: We seek to train people how to effectively and peacefully handle conflict. This new year, we are expanding to train incarcerated individuals and need your help to make this program successful!

Where else do people learn how to deal with conflict so that it doesn’t escalate to violence? We believe this void explains the excessive violence around us. The good news? Filling this void CAN be part of the solution.

Building on the principles of Ghandi, Nelson Mandela and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the nonviolence method to conflict management can be powerfully applied to any setting, any issue, any relationship. Right here, right now.

The training overpowers preconceived notions and past experience, helping us embrace forgiveness, understanding and acceptance. Our team has trained extensively with Dr. Bernard Lafayette who worked side by side with Dr. King and the other young leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King believed that nonviolence training was the key to really healing our country and allowing us to move forward.

This spring, New Way is expanding to serve students of Ingram State Technical College at Alabama's Draper Correctional Facility . Ingram State is unique in that 100% of their student body, as a state-funded community college, is incarcerated. These students are working hard towards vocational training, which are wonderful tools towards successful re-integration into society upon release. New Way hopes to equip them with one more priceless tool- a certification in Kingian Nonviolence. These students will be trained the entire semester from January until May by senior trainer Ronald Smith, with course objectives including: learning the principles and teachings of nonviolence and how they apply to everyday life; understanding the effects of internal violence; engaging with other participants in activities that engage and provoke discussions; understanding conflict and how to reach reconciliation; and developing an action plan for moving forward.

The overall effectiveness of the program will be studied through research on recidivism rates, inner-prison violence, behavioral incidents, and many other variables. All donations will cover travel and time costs for the trainers as well as curriculum expenses for students. The sooner you can help us the better, and any amount is welcome! Nonviolence is a powerful tool for everyone, and it is never too late to engage potential practitioners. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once said, "The time is always right to do what's right."

We are incredibly thankful for your help in this season of giving, and we hope you will join us in our journey towards the Beloved Community!
