Save our Shelter!
That dream came true in May of 2017 but it came at a cost. Due to issues with construction we had to use all of our savings and we were left with a $100,000 morgage and an unfinished building. We have since had to close our doors because we had to much debt to sustain shelter operations, the morgage, and finish remodeling and maintaining the facility.
We hope to raise $150,000 to help us finish the facility and assist us in paying off the morgage. Twenty years ago the community had a dream, to raise funds and open a facility to care for the homeless, lost, and neglected animals of Carton County AND today that dream is still live and we still have hope for our new shelter and its future.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who has and continues to help us regardless of the size of the donation, it all helps!
Thank you again for your genorosity and support! We couldn't have done it without you!
Although Boldt was a huge reason in the success of putting a plan together for the remodel and overseeing the project, we had issues with other contractors that contributed to a lack of organization as a whole. One particular contractor chose not to honor his agreement to assist with free labor from the apprentice program as well, doubled their bid that was verbally give. The same contractor delayed the job of which was already on a timeline due to the sale of our prior facility. This delay also caused issues with other contractors who had difficulty honoring their timelines. Consequently, due to these many issues and delays we used all our savings as well as it left us with $100,000 mortgage and a facility that is not finished of which we cannot afford to finish or maintain.
In 2017 we had hired new Directors that were in charge of making new money to assist us with the new facility and growth of Friends of Animals, those directors did not raise the new funds as needed or required.
And as we have previously shared, our new leadership had also concluded that the contracts we had with local City’s and Townships for impound services were no longer effective and were costing us to provide animal control and animal care.
Approximately eight months ago the new Interim Director stepped in because the facility was on the verge of closing at that time. She came in to review whether we could get Friends of Animals back on track and sustainable and viable. However, because of the many issues in 2017 the business no longer seems viable due to lack of funds and donations and a facility that is unsustainable.
To pay off and finish the renovation of our facility to healthy standards and pay for operations through the end of the year we have concluded it would cost $350,000. Our goal as mentioned in the Pine Journal, Cloquet Minnesota is by closing now and using money from our public appeal we would pay off our bills, mortgage, and finish our facility leaving us the possibility of reopening in the future.
Friends of Animals deeply believes and their mission to help the homeless animals in our community. We will be working to adopt out or transfer all the animals in our care to no kill facility partners by our close date. We will also not be taking any animals in effective immediately.
We would like to think that this is for now and not forever. We are working on several different options that may allow Friends of Animals to come back at some capacity. Words are not enough to thank the 100’s if not 1000’s of people that over the years have given their blood, sweat, and tears to the shelter. Together we have saved 1000’s of innocent animals that needed us. Your sacrifices did not go unnoticed, for those that have given so much of themselves and supported us last 34 years we are eternally grateful.
We are asking for a plea to help Save Our Shelter! So if you are unable to donate to our cause then please share our campaign and spread the word.
Our new building is everything we could have asked for and more. However we went way over budget and as much as we were trying to avoid having a mortgage that unfortunately didn't happen. So our campaign is still ongoing as we are trying to "Fire up and Burn" this mortgage !
