Winner of four Helen Hayes Awards, Crowns is a coming-of-age story about Yolanda, a self-destructive teen living in Brooklyn whose mother sends her away to live with Grand Mother Shaw down South. After the violent death of her brother, Yolanda is ushered through pain and baptized by the love, compassion and fortitude of the sisterhood of “Hat Queens.” Each Queens’ hat carries a memory--a history of life, death, religion, racism, identity, unity, pride, trials and triumphs. And their stories are told through ancient oral and spiritual traditions originally from Africa which are now embodied in field songs, blues, jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop and the Gospel of the American Black Church.
