Help Rescue North Korean Refugees

Deducible
“Learn to do good, seek justice, correct oppression, bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.”
--Isaiah 1:17

Durihana is a ministry dedicated to the rescue of North Korean refugees.  Led by Pastor Chun Ki-won, the ministry has rescued nearly 1200 North Korean refugees.  As a pioneer of the North Korean Underground Railroad Pastor Chun has been called “the Schindler of Asia” by the Asian media.  Over 80% of the people we rescue are North Korean women caught in China’s thriving sex-trafficking industry.

We have purchased women from brokers in order to set them free.  We have trekked through thousands of miles of jungle. We have even inadvertently crossed mine-fields. We have freed North Korean women who have been locked in rooms for years as slaves. We have rescued children, men, women, old, and young. Pastor Chun has even spent time in prison in China for the “crime” of rescuing North Korean refugees.

Ghost Children

Children born in China must have a national identification card in order to receive medical care and education. In order to get the ID card, their mother must appear before the authorities and provide documentation. China forcibly repatriates North Korean’s caught in the country. Since it is a capital crime to leave North Korea without the leaders' permission North Korean’s who are caught face, at a minimum time in a labor camp, and at worst execution for leaving the country.  As a result, children born to North Korean women who have been sold to Chinese men often do not have an identity in this world. They are known as the Ghost Children.

Durihana International School

When Ghost children or North Korean children escape and make it to South Korea they have a profoundly difficult time assimilating into society. If they were born in China (Ghost children), they often do not even speak Korean. The students are made fun of, they are much smaller due to lifelong malnourishment, and they are far behind educationally.

Seeing this, we started the Durihana International School.  It is a boarding school for North Korean students.  Often their parents are unable or unwilling to take care of them. The school is run on the promises of God with both staff and students trusting the Lord to provide for and take care of them.  The students have learned that God cares about them, and they are not forgotten as He provides for their most basic needs.

Every morning the students rise just after 5:00 am for prayer and staff led devotion. Then they return to their dorms and prepare for the day. Breakfast is served and then school begins. The children receive a sold, well-rounded education, being trained in all the subjects they would study in a South Korean school. In addition, they are taught the English language and the Bible. As they learn to love, they are also loving to learn.

The Reason for the GoFundMe Page

The U.S. Branch of Durihana is presenting the need on behalf of Durihana. We are a 501(c)3 charity registered with the IRS. We work with Durihana in South Korea, and with North Korean refugees living in the United States.

The Durihana facilities are based in Seoul, South Korea and house multiple boys and girls dormitories, the school kitchen and cafeteria, two floors of classrooms, Durihana offices, staff quarters, and Durihana church.

We were just informed by the courts in South Korea that Durihana must leave their building by February 28th. The city of Seoul has been systematically demolishing, remodeling, and updating various neighborhoods. When they come into a district to remodel it, the businesses are forced to relocate.  The current buildings Durihana occupies will be demolished and turned into apartment buildings.

This is where we need your help!  Durihana is in need of $1,000,000 (US) just to have a deposit to rent new facilities.

Let me explain the reason for the high price.  Rent in Korea works very different than the U.S.  If you want to rent a place, you usually put down anywhere from 40% to 80% of the entire value of the property.  So if you want to rent an apartment valued at $100,000 then you will need $40,000 down. The landlord holds your deposit and earns interest off of it and then returns it to you when you move out. The amount you put down on a deposit also determines the amount of rent you pay monthly.  The more you put down, the less your monthly rent is.  The cost per square foot of real estate in Seoul averages about $700 per square foot and can easily be as much as $1200/square foot.

With Durihana currently occupying multiple floors in five different buildings, the amount of square footage needed is significant.

We are asking that you please consider giving to this worthy cause!  The need is great, but God is greater and we believe that God will provide this need as we continue to pray and seek after Him.  You can read more about the work of Durihana, including the Durihana International School, at www.durihanamission.org.
