Hi, my name is James Hinds.  I'm a Paramedic. I'm also a single dad and a Buddhist.

I first met Roshi Joan Halifax in February 2018 at a Masterclass for Resiliency and Mental Health for Healthcare Professionals at the Hospital for Sick Children.  Roshi Joan's eloquency, presence, and power were an inspiration to me, and in that moment I felt - she is most definitely is a person I would be confident emulating.  I started taking notice of Roshi Joan's worldwide humanitarian projects, and this evoked a clarity of deeper meaning and purpose for my life, both professionally and personally.

Since 1980, Roshi has been involved with the nomadic people of Humla, Nepal in an organization called Nepal Nomad Clinic ( https://www.upaya.org/social-action/nomads-clinic/).

The official report of the trip from 2018 if here, if you are interested: https://www.upaya.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Nomads-Clinic-Report-2018.pdf

To give you an idea, last year the team trekked over 170 miles across terrain ranging from 6,600' to 18,300' (2000m to 5550m above sea level) and saw over 1000 patients in six different clinic locations and numerous smaller clinics along the way.

The clinics included the medical specialties of neurology, cardiology, gynecology, pulmonology, ENT, internal medicine, emergency medicine, dentistry, midwifery, pediatrics, family medicine, and others.

They also provided extensive wound care; took care of people suffering from joint pain, gastritis, heart problems, neurological disorders, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, eye problems, skin diseases, and respiratory
issues; had a full-service dental clinic and an intensive pediatric clinic that served hundreds of children.

So my aspiration to be a part of this program has come to be; I applied to the program this year and I've been accepted.

I will travel with a team of 20 accomplished Canadian and American healthcare providers -- physicians, nurses, and indigenous medicine practitioners -- to Humla, a super remote area of Nepal, to provide basic healthcare and provisions for the nomadic peoples there. All of this work is volunteer based and made possible by the healthcare practitioners and their sponsors.

So - I need to raise 10,000$ to actually provide my services to these people - it includes a trekking permit, among other costs; you can message me if you have questions. I'm currently gathering funds, and with deep bows of appreciation and gratitude I would appreciate any support, so that in turn I may offer my support to others.

Seeing pictures of Humla and the people who live there moved me; I am eager to use the skills and expertise I have acquired as a health care person, in order to serve the communities of Humla with this group of amazing people.

Sincerely,

James Hinds
