Nenelazi would like to attend school during period

We, Susi, David and Anna, are three Germans who started a project which is based on the aim to empower women in the township ‘Philippi’, which is close to Cape Town in South Africa.

Early 2018 Susi and David have started a project called ‘DANCE for a CHANCE ’ in that same township. Their work in Philippi was based on the idea to face possible issues for the high school drop-out rate in the area. They noticed circumstances which have a negative effect on the average school attendance. What we currently concentrate on is the high demand of hygiene articles for girls.

More than 50 percent of all students in Philippi drop out of school prior to graduation, often leading to further difficulties such as poverty, crime or youth prostitution in the townships. Young girls, in particular, are severely affected by a lack of equal rights. From school drop-outs to early school leaving, young girls go through a process of ever-increasing absenteeism through to the final decision to leave school prematurely. Partly responsible for this is the fact that every girl during her period cannot attend school for 3 - 7 days a month due to lack of hygiene articles.

Often toilet paper, old fabrics or other unhygienic materials are being used, which often leads to infections. Lack of education makes the issue of menstruation into a tabooed topic that is not talked about in families. Women and girls are on their own here.

In order to create an adequate basis for equality, hygiene articles and educational offers for their application must be provided and girls at schools specifically supported.

Together with local NGOs, already working with mentoring programs in schools (Amandla Development ), as well as with HIV and Sexual Customer Centers (AYFS )), we want to build the necessary coaching and distribution centers for menstrual products.

We will organize workshops during our stay of three months about menstrual hygiene and the usage of sanitary pads and menstrual cups.
Supported by menstrual cup producers (minacup.org, www.organicup.com) that already have successful (ecologically and economically sustainable) solutions in similar areas, we now want to bring them to Philippi as well.

Mina Cup is not only sponsoring us with cups, but also providing two experienced mentors who will fly in from Johannesburg.

Girls who are unable to afford hygiene articles and are thus severely restricted in their educational path should be provided with ecologically sustainable menstrual products and informed about their use, care and hygiene.

However, of course there are different costs related to this project that we unfortunately can not all cover, which is why we ask for financial help and support.
