Alexis Cain: This Is My Dream

Donation protected
College is a time for finding yourself, and for finding your purpose in making the world a better and different place. This year, recent college graduate Alexis Cain, has not only found herself but changed the way many people around the nation think about inclusion. She became known as the “girl who changes”, meaning the girl who took steps to changing the opinion of the abilities that individuals with disabilities are in fact capable of.  Alexis took on leadership roles in Best Buddies, became the first woman with Down Syndrome to join a sorority (where she is now a proud Alpha Sigma Alpha Sister), and spoke out as a self-advocate for the act of inclusion. Alexis has always aspired to make a difference, and it is clear that will continue to make a change in her adult living.

As every college student nears graduation, they begin to think about the next steps in their journey. This is where every young adult takes their passion and applies it to a job that can bring them happiness, as well as guide them to the steps of successful adult living. When talking to Alexis about her next steps post graduating the University of Murray State, I found that she had a wonderful plan but greatly needed support to get her plan to action. Alexis expressed, “I have a few ideas for what I want to do, I just need an answer and help from Jesus to make it happen”.

Alexis now dreams of opening a business in Murray, Kentucky that will show that individuals with disabilities can create a workplace where they can excel, creating a life for themselves and possibly inspire others to do the same. Through creating her own business and work opportunity, individuals like Alexis will be granted the opportunities her same aged peers have, and will be given the chance to prove to the world that they too are important, successful members of our communities. Alexis wants to start out with an online "fashion boutique for women of all sizes and shapes" and is aggressively brainstorming ideas to find the best way to get it off the ground.  Alexis  knows that she wants her business to present the idea of opportunity to a multitude of individuals with disabilities, showing them that they too can be a vital member of their community and feel their own self worth, necessary for adult living.

As Alexis’s friend, this idea is very heartwarming to see.  Alexis is just like many of her peers, eager to give back and do something she is passionate about. With Alexis’s ability to advocate and her promising work ethic, I know that if the means were provided to start this wonderful, potential business that she’d create yet another success story from it.  She created worldwide news by becoming the first Down Syndrome sorority woman of Alpha Sigma Alpha at Murray State University, appeared on the Meredith Vierara Show and followed that up by getting to meet her roll model Taylor Swift.  Murray, Ky.  is one of the most inclusive communities I have ever had the privilege of being in and I know the community will support Alexis in these endeavors.

When brainstorming in how to make this opportunity a reality for Alexis, I thought back to how Alexis shared her story after making history on her college campus. With one link, her story was spread not only throughout the nation, but also to individuals across the WORLD. It is our hopes that through this page link, we can share this new dream of hers as well.

The purpose of this GoFundMe page is to provide support to Alexis in achieving another dream. This dream, however, is a special dream because this opportunity will forever benefit individuals such as Alexis in their adult living. If you are interested in aiding Alexis in her efforts to raise the funds to create this business opportunity, you can donate to this page. All donations, big or small, are appreciated greatly and will make a significant difference in reaching her goal. We encourage everyone, even if you are not able to personally donate, to share this page to help her story reach others. MUCH thanks for any support you give.
