It was necessary to leave the property we had in Redmond, WA. Everyone loved the gardens, but the infrastructure of that property was crumbling and there were no people to care for the future of that property.
We found the perfect location in SE Minnesota, back where we began over 40 years ago. Unfortunately, there have been numerous delays by the City of Redmond which have kept the developer from being able to start. Over the past 15 months our Founder, Rev. Paul Beyerl and his partner Rev. Gerry Beyerl, have covered all of the financial needs of the relocation including the down payment and, for now, monthly 'rent' to the Owners until we can complete the purchase.
Friday August 10, 2018 we learned of more setbacks (the trees) which could delay the closing of the sale by as much as 12 months.
We've exhausted our personal savings and need help to protect the land our Church is buying.
If you have ever read The Master Book of Herbalism (over 55,000 of you have) or taken classes or read any of my other 11 books or visited the gardens in Redmond, WA (Kirkland) or been a Member... We've grown and matured but because of our commitments as a Church to help the disadvantaged, the Church does not have a lot of money.
We need your help.
Let me tell you our story:
For years we believed that our property in Redmond, Washington (with the Kirkland address) was permanent. The gardens were a botanical heaven. The growing number of storage buildings for the library and archives and records added go the charm.
The last two years, however, I was no longer able go garden. Until Rev. Gerry retired from Brown Bear, I was the primary source of garden labor. I was probably working outside 40 hours a week and it was a lot of labor to lose. Rev. Gerry could no do it all. We had created a 45,000 square foot botanical garden and it was something the two of us could just barely tend, even with occasional help. There were growing areas whee the weed were taking over. There was work needed on some of the larger trees which was beyond our budget.
The cottage needed to have the roof done. It needed to have foundation wok done. The electrical wiring was not yet up to code. And for 24 years we had a portable toilet ( to the horror of our neighbor to the north) because we were not connected to any workable septic system and thee was no city sewer available. And when the a sewer line would happen we could expect an enormous bill.
For all of this, the property taxes continued to escalate.
It had become a source of worry for Rev. Gerry and myself. We had given the property to the Church, but along with it were some major financial needs and a need to 50-75 hours a week labor. We had personally provided the financial needs and labor but now wee wee both on Social Security and aging and it was obvious that the future of the property was anything but secure.
When we were compost, there was nothing to protect the gardens from a developer’s bulldozer. That knowledge was becoming increasingly clear and it weighed upon us.
And then, in February, 2017, the email arrived.
