Vietnam War Memorial

Veterans Memorial Park

Las Cruces, New Mexico

In 2005, four years after we dedicated the Bataan Death March Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park.  We had a site visit with a Vietnam Veteran from California, he commented on the monuments at the park and asked, where is your Vietnam memorial? We were embarrassed to say we didn’t have one.  So at that point we started the Vietnam War Memorial “Heroes Never Thanked”.  To continue with the validity of the park we needed to remember the 14 year long Vietnam War.  We got with a designer and gave him pencil sketches and ideas of what we wanted the final memorial to be.

The results are included in this brochure.  The highlights are, the cylindrical walls of the memorial will be rock, similar to the rock walls of Las Cruces.  The interior will have black marble slabs laser etched with photos of the different branches of the military and their contributions in the war.  The center back wall will have 398 photos of all the KIA’s from New Mexico laser etched around a New Mexico Zia Symbol.  Hovering over the entire memorial will be a UH-1H Red Cross Huey seemingly trying to land to bring life to the men on the ground in their struggle.

The memorial scheduled to be completed and dedicated on March 28th 2015 will be of national recognition quality and continue to make Las Cruces Veterans Memorial Park, Hallowed Ground.
