NC Farmworker Flood Relief
Donation protected
On October 8, 2016, Hurricane Matthew inundated Sampson County. Sampson is the largest producer of hogs, turkeys, and flue-cured tobacco in North Carolina and is also home to a significant number of farmworkers. Many of these farmworkers lost everything in the floods.
The Episcopal Farmworker Ministry in Dunn, NC, is a nonprofit that is collecting material and monetary donations to help these families replace what they lost. We, two current Duke students with connections to Sampson County and two Duke alumni who now work in Sampson County Schools, are collecting donations with this GoFundMe from the Duke community to support the continued disaster relief efforts of this organization.
While we initially planned to donate this money for rebuilding manufactured home floors, the Episcopal Farmworker Ministry informed us that the homes are no longer liveable and they are instead helping families find new housing. The greatest need that they are hoping to solve is mattresses, many of which were destroyed in the flood.
The Episcopal Farmworker Ministry is planning to buy new mattresses in bulk. They hope $1200 will cover the costs of 3 or 4 mattresses.
Once this fundraising campaign is complete, I will withdraw all money from this account and write a check to the Episcopal Farmwork Ministry. They have started a separate account specifically for purchasing mattresses. A picture of the receipt will be uploaded to this GoFundMe.
DUKE STUDENTS: comment with your net ID to be included in an opportunity to win three pizzas!
