Hi, my name is Chaeli Shields and I am one of Nayima's aunts and certainly one of her biggest fans! Recently, I learned that Nayima is unable to play basketball due to a number of genetic limitations. However, if she receives adequate therapy and conditioning there is hope that this very bright, talented young basketball player can make it back to the court in the safest, healthiest way possible for her growing limbs. Will you help me in raising money to get Nayima's feet, ankles, and knees in the best shape they can be in for her awesome abilities (basketball!)?!!
Nayima's specific diagnosis is the following:
-Bilateral foot pain secondary to Bilateral pes planus and plantar flexor contractures.
-Bilateral knee flexion.
-Bilateral navicular drop.
-Bilateral outtoeing.
-TTP globally at bilateral ankles over all soft tissue and bony prominences with navicular being most sensitive bilaterally, increased heel cord tension bilaterally.
-Decreased talocrural joint mobility in an anterior posterior direction.
-Severe impairments in bilateral DF Rom which impairs her gait pattern.
-Weakness at bilateral ankles that impairs her dynamic stability for sports and ambulation.
In more simpler terms:
Nayima is the daughter of a wonderful family with one member representing above the 7 foot line. As a result, Nayima is growing at an exponential rate and quite simply, her bones and her muscles are having trouble keeping up with each other and on track to what some would call "normal" or "regular" physical development at her age. Thus, she is suffering from severe pain that most athletes do not suffer from at her age, much less in a lifetime.
- Severe foot pain due to plantar fasciitis in both feet and primarily due to a genetic condition "pes planus" otherwise known as flat feet.
- Anterior knee pain in both legs
- Because her feet are so flat, she has bone pronation
- Nayima cannot put her feet together without her knees bowing out (making it difficult to activate muscles in her feet versus in her knees for example, leading to the aforementioned anterior knee pain).
- Severe impairments bilaterally (both feet) which debilitate her gait pattern and her ability for playing sports and walking without assistance
OUR GOAL is to get Nayima the physical therapy she needs, the equipment for rehabbing, and the ability to overcome her genetic limitations through medical care. Ultimately, a pair of custom orthodics to assist her in correcting her gait and her ability to play sports is also vital to the success of her treatment. Accordingly, a proper pair of cross-training athletic shoes too.
Fundraising timeline: 6 weeks
Fundraising goal: $900
Overall rehab timeline: 6 months
Cost breakdown:
-Custom Orthotics $365
-Pair of cross-trainers $150 (rough estimate). Nayima wears a size 11 athletic shoe and will be required to wear these shoes all day, only taking them off to sleep.
Physical Therapy Equipment: (roughly) $100
-BAPS Board
-Balance Mat
-Plantar fascitis arch strengthening Equipment
-Medicine Ball
Supplementary Costs:
-Gas (to and from doctors and physical therapy in both Hinesville, Savannah and Richmond Hill). $240 (roughly)
-Ice therapy ($2.99 x 3 times a week) $54 (roughly)
-A milk shake from time to time for being a trooper!
In sum: Nayima is 11 years old and loves to play basketball. Unfortunately, due to her current medical ailments she is unable to play this season and potentially future seasons if we can't get ahead of this treatment. Her family loves and supports her but times can be tough, therefore raising the funds independently for this lovely little family is not an option right now.
