The Classroom Gardener Program

Hello Navigateur Community,
We are raising money to have the Classroom Gardener Program come to our school next September. M. Gosselin, the teachers and several parents on the APE have been working to make this a reality. If you can contribute, however big or small, it would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to pass the link to family members, they can contribute too. Here are some details about the program:
- The program was developed by a Richmond based elementary school teacher, Megan Zeni, who runs a part time outdoor classroom at Homma Elementary.
The program includes:
-Teacher resources (age appropriate resource books and teachers’ manual with handouts.)
- Two half day professional development workshops for our teachers
- A professional gardener will join each class for a one-hour, monthly workshop working side by side with our teachers to model how to take learning outdoors using our new BC curriculum. With five divisions, this means our school will profit from five hours per month of learning outdoors!
- Includes all of the supplies required (soil, tools, seeds etc) and bi-weekly care for the garden over the summer months when students are away.
- And of course, growing and eating fresh produce!
Why is learning outdoors important? Studies have shown that experience-based learning outdoors offers improved physical health, stress/anxiety reduction around learning disabilities, improved classroom behaviour, improved problem solving and creativity skills and community building.
I'm working with a sub-committee of the APE and we are currently applying for grants and sponsorships from various private sector and provincial/federal organizations in addition to this fundraising campaign.
