Help Navdeep Thind

Life is unpredictable and sometimes you don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month or next year. My dear friend, Navdeep Thind and her family have been forced to come to this realization in a manner that would leave the strongest person in the weakest frame of mind.

Navdeep had a happy family like many of us, where she went about her daily life taking care of her children, her husband, home and her career. Her husband and her shared the traditional dreams of together experiencing the joy and happiness of watching their son and daughter, Kanav and Mannat graduate and enter the workforce; dancing their hearts out at the childrens’ weddings, babysitting their grandkids, and going for long walks while they grew old together happily.

But fate has decided something else for them. Navdeep while in her prime suffered a stroke on June 29,2016. This stroke caused her to suffer  brain damage and up until recently she had been in the hospital, away from her children, her husband, her life and on most days not being able to comprehend what had happened to her and why it had change her life so suddenly and drastically.

This stroke did not only affect her physically and mentally but has now deeply impacted the lives of her children and her husband who are suffering emotionally and financially.  Her 9 year old daughter who never spent a day without her has not heard her mother call out to her in over 9 months. Her son, while on the cusp of adulthood needed his mother there to guide him in the right direction is now alone trying his best to do what he believes his mother would have wanted while his father spends every waking moment trying to keep his family together in these rough times.  

After spending 9 months in the hospital, Navdeep’s battle is far from over. She cannot speak, she cannot walk or do any of the simple tasks that we may take for granted. Her children who yearn for their mother’s hug do not know whether they will ever have their mother back the way she was.

Her husband Kulwinder is doing his best to play the role of a mother, father, homemaker, provider all at the same time. But due to him needing to remain by Navdeep’s side, his own work has suffered as he is unable to stay away from Navdeep and the children for hours at a time just so that he can work on a regular basis.

I see the family struggling every day going through this worst time of their lives; trying to stay strong, but there is only so much one can do. Emotionally we can help, but financially there is so much more that is needed as there are many medical expenses which are not covered under OHIP.
