NATURE SPACE
Climb. Play. Imagine.

My name is Jessica Lieuallen and I am a K-2 teacher at Corbett Arts Program with Spanish (CAPS). CAPS is a K-8 school in the Corbett (OR) School District.  Outside of school hours, I have created a Nature Space Committee of parent volunteers and community members. Friends of Nature Space, with the help of Charitable Partnership Fund, have joined efforts to raise funds to make this dream a reality.

Currently, our school has a covered concrete play area, field, and a 5,000 sq foot asphalted area for the students to play on during recess. We do not have a play ground or play structure for the children.

What we do have are kids that are creative, imaginative, patient, and grateful. They make do with the resources they have available. They create games out of pinecones and sticks, leaves and tree stumps. The make imaginary trading stores and build fairy houses. They are being challenged creatively with their given play space, but most students are not getting the physical exertion they require during their 20-minute breaks from the classroom. A play space that incorporates this need and enhances their appreciation for nature is exactly what our community needs! Not only will this space support students during the school day, it will also be open to the community after school hours. This will be a space for our families to use while their children practice t-ball or soccer, a space for people to meet up and have playdates and connect, and a wonderful space to host outdoor performances, celebrations, or community events.

The mission of NATURE SPACE (playground) is to provide students and area families with a play space that fosters a connection with nature and encourages children to think outside the box through creative play, curiosity, and adventure. We believe that giving students a space to support their active bodies will, in turn, support their active minds. This playspace will be a gathering place for the community with hopes for enhancing overall wellness and connection to the school community.

After discussing our plan with multiple advocates and professionals that represent the playground and special needs communities, it seems our design is unique but well planned.

The biggest concern is the surface material. We have received quotes from multiple companies on a surface that supports the fall height with proper absorbency, is friendly to mobility aids (wheelchairs, walkers and beyond), and compliments the natural theme of the design.

It looks like this new surface material will more than double our budget (gulp!). However, it is important to us that we create a space that is welcoming of all abilities. The great thing is that this playspace is already designed to allow kids to feel included, and it will support kids with all different needs, including but not limited to, children who experience autism, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, and other social and emotional disorders.

Our plan is to continue to move forward and keep our timeline aggressive. We will start the build this summer and have a great start to our project. However, the surface material will have to be changed out in a later "phase," once we have secured the necessary funds and the design is near completion. In the meantime, the playspace WILL meet ADA regulations and there will be spaces accessible by mobility aids. It will just take some time to get to the place that we are 100% committed to reaching, all-abilities friendly!

We will continue to apply for grants and fundraise. If you, or someone you know, might be willing to offer assistance in this process, please connect us!

This project will be 100% funded through donations. There are many ways for the community to contribute and we have some exciting opportunities coming up in the next couple months. In the meantime, please consider donating here and share with friends and family who would like to support the creation of this wonderful community project.

Every donation counts no matter how much! Nature Space is a program of the Charitable Partnership Fund (CPF), a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt Oregon non-profit corporation, EIN 93-1267966. Your donation qualifies as a charitable contribution.

Payment processing fees for campaigns are 2.9% + $0.30 on each donation. Please consider this amount in your donation. You will have an option to leave a "tip" to help cover this cost. Every little bit counts! Thank you for helping us reach our goal!
