Nanay Ko

Asians and Asian-Americans are rarely represented in film and media. When they are, most of the time their roles are small, stereotypical, or no depth. This is the story about a girl who broke family ties and tradition to chase her dreams. After her father's untimely passing, Christine finds out her family business is failing. To make amends for leaving, she chooses to help the restaurant all the while rebuilding her relationship with her mom.  The film highlights the generational and cultural differences in beliefs between immigrant Americans and first-generation Americans through song, dance, and food.  This film will make a huge impact in Asian representation in Hollywood.

The success of our two Seed&Spark campaigns has shown that the world is ready and eager for a film like this. The campaigns opened many doors we did not think were possible for our story, and in the past year, we've been slowly closing those doors and choosing opportunities fit for our project. By doing so, we've realized that we will need more financial support to make this musical come to life!

Our goal is to raise at least $50,000 to support our new developments. Most of the funds will go into the following:

If we surpass our goal, the additional funds will go into our budget of hiring local crew in MD and  catering for the shoot!

"The script takes place in Maryland, not just because I lived there, but because this story is very much a small town girl dreaming to live in the big city. Your hometown is a huge part of you. It's hard to let go, to start somewhere new. I can't wait to go back and film at some of the places I've grown to love. The seasons, the agriculture, the historic cities, and the gorgeous Chesapeake Bay–they all have its own character in the film.

There aren't many films that I relate to or characters that I fully connect with. With some inspiration of my life and the friends and families I grew up with, I want to tell a deeply intimate, vulnerable, and honest story about what it's like being a first-generation American raised in a traditional and conservative household.I want to show the talents and colors of my culture, and how song, dance, and food brings our community together. I know I am ready for the challenge and have a strong support system of talented filmmakers and artists who believe in me and believe this story needs to be told."
