Nakulan and Sahadaevan ( popularly known as Sadhu) are a pair of delightful 21 year old twin boys who received a diagnosis of Autism when they were three years old.
While Sadhu is non verbal requiring support for even most day to day tasks , Nakulan is a polyglot who knows at least 21 different languages and counting ! To the great delight of his piano teacher, Nakulan was born with perfect pitch.
Despite Nakulan's significant musical and language abilities however, he too is unable to lead a normal life like other Canadian 21 year olds due to social and other interaction issues that are symptomatic with autism.
For instance, neither of the twins can drive a car or go out , even for short distances, by themselves without assistance. They cannot go into a grocery store to buy a tube of toothpaste or safely spend an evening at the local park by themselves without supervision.
Our uncle and aunt were dealing with these daunting challenges along with raising their other child , a 17 year old daughter .
On May 29th 2018 more tragedy struck the Uthayan family which lost a huge pillar of support when the twins' stay-home mother , our aunt Mrs. Usha Uthayan ,passed away after a valiant battle with cancer.
With the untimely demise of our aunt, a stay home mother to her three children, the family has suffered a huge loss in running it's day-to-day functions.
In the wake of this tragedy and to plan for any future unforeseen circumstances , we thought of raising funds which will be used to supplement the government sponsored disability support and other resources currently available with the immediate family.
The Uthayans are a remarkable family, a true Canadian treasure. Despite their many troubles, they continue to consistently support the larger community by being leaders in their local religious community, helping new immigrants to Canada often hosting them rent free in their own house for months at a time and virtually keeping an open house for the extended community to drop in at all hours for counseling and other support with a plethora of life issues .
As a gesture of our profound admiration and love , some of us, friends of the Uthayan family have started this go fund me campaign .
While our uncle continues to be the sole breadwinner of the family , these funds will be held in a trust and used to supplement existing provincial/ federal government sponsored disability support and other resources. The twins father (Arun Uthayan) their current guardian will act as the trustee to use manage the funds for their current and longer term needs.
