Nairobi Orphange Trip 2019!

Rachel & Hayley are taking on a once in a lifetime challenge that will push them to their limits both mentally & emotionally.

As a keen fundraiser & charity worker, Rachel is experienced when it comes to raising money. She has her own Christmas children's charity on the Isle of Man, and raised over £30,000 in just 4 months for Manx Breast Cancer during her Miss Isle of Man challenge in 2017. Travelling to and working in an orphanage is something Rachel has always wanted to experience, and she feels she is now ready to do it. She has a 6 year old daughter herself, and she feels it is important to share her memories with her when she gets older.

Hayley is a well travelled lady and has African descendants from the Sierra Leone region so is excited to explore the culture more. She has travelled to New Zealand & Australia for 6 weeks, Thailand for 3 weeks, and Gambia for 2 weeks where her aunt has a family home. She too has always wanted to experience working in the third world and is looking forward to the challenge.

Together, the girls think they make a great team and are busy preparing themselves for the change in culture when they arrive, this includes receiving 6 vaccinations, taking a course of anti-malarial pills, studying Swahili, and watching some guided videos so they don't feel too overwhelmed upon arrival. They will be taking 3 flights, travelling for over 24 hours, and will be in the orphanage working the same day they arrive.

Kenya is home to over 1.9 million orphans, the majority of the girls work will be focused on providing care and eduction in an orphanage in Kikuyu, a city with a population of around 3 million with 42% living in poverty. Rachel and Hayley will be working with children in the orphanage on a daily and nightly basis. A typical day will include teaching, playing games with the children, washing, cleaning, sports, and most importantly showing them lots of love and affection and giving those who live in the orphange some much needed hope, fun and laughter. These orphanages exist to provide support and care for vulnerable and at-risk children and it was this fantastic work that Agape undertake that attracted Rachel and Hayley to get involved.

In order to make their trip as beneficial as possible, they  would like to bring medicines, educational supplies, clothing and games. Every single pound counts for the trip, and none of this will be possible without the generous donations from our community.

Rachel and Hayley will be blogging when they can in order to raise awareness of how awful the conditions are and how the volunteer programmes such as Agape make such a difference to children's lives. They will update their donors on their progress, have the tissues ready!

Thank you so much for your help!
