Kate & The Arctic Circle Residency

My name is Kate Collyer and I'm a visual artist and printmaker based in the Hudson Valley of New York. I have been invited among a few selected artists and scientists to participate in The Arctic Circle residency program in June 2016 and I couldn't be more excited for the opportunity. For three weeks the other residents and I will sail together on an ice class barkentine tallship exploring Svalbard, a High Arctic archipelago just ten degrees from the North Pole, observing, creating, and collaborating as we go.

This trip will not only be an incredible experience, but will aid me in enriching the research I have been doing into the landscape and will continue the development of my work.  I have recently begun to work with glass, making art pieces that blend print, glass and wood elements.  Being able to experience High Arctic will only further my exploration into this intriguing, ice filled landscape and glass as a material in my art.  My art pieces focus on landscape and our historical connection with the places around us and I use my own personal experiences to inform my pieces.


Even though I’ve been awarded the residency, I still must raise funds for expenses related to the expedition and this is where I am asking for help. I must raise $6,300 towards the residency, the $2,000 beyond that that will go towards my airfare to Longyearbyen, Svalbard, and the materials related to the completion of the glass and print art pieces I create upon my return.
