Andrew's Eagle Scout Project

My name is Andrew Richardson, and I am a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 210, located in Holland, Ohio.  I am 15 years old and am an active member in many school activities, including Varsity Cross Country and Track, Student Council President, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Regional Officer, and National Youth Leadership Training Staff. Over the next few weeks, I will be completing a project to pursue Scouting's Highest Rank, Eagle Scout.

My project, titled "Get Haskins Reading," aims to promote reading in young children in my hometown of Haskins. In two separate locations, I will be installing a Free Little Library, a recycled composite bench,  and a personally built planter. I will also lay playground-approved mulch to protect from weeds. My hope is that this project provides a safe place for children to read a variety of their favorite literature.

A Free Little Library is a birdhouse-shaped structure that can hold several dozen books. They can be found in small towns and large cities around the nation. They are intended to promote reading to people of all ages. The honors system is implemented; if you like a book in the FLL, you can take it, but you must replace it with one of your own. This keeps a constant flow of new books in the Library, so it can service a community for years. This will be especially helpful to Haskins since it does not have a library of its own.

I have my project approved, and now I need your help to execute it. The many costs of the benches, lumber, concrete, and shipping are expected to total around $1200-$1500. I am asking for your help in funding my project. I am hoping to have the project completed by May 2016, so time is of the essence. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. Your contribution will help to leave a lasting impact on a community of children and one aspiring Boy Scout.

I plan to donate any excess funds I have to the Otsego High School Library and Media Center, in the hope that they can use the money to provide additional reading resources at the high school level.

Thank you very much for your time, and know that I will use your hard-earned money to the best of my ability to make an impact on my community.

Sincerely,
Andrew Richardson
