The Watering Can

My name is Sam and I am hoping to reach out to everyone who is inspired to make a difference.  Please join me and my friends in supporting a mission we call The Watering Can. This project was started four years ago when a small group of friends took a good look around West Seattle; we began to notice there were more and more crimes being  committed by younger and younger kids.   Disgruntled teens who were fighting depression and hopelessness began crying out in efforts to be noticed.  We decided we had to do something to show the people in our neighborhood that we care for them and believe in them.  We pooled as much change as we could get together between us and printed t-shirts, signs and banners that read "YOU ARE" followed by a collage of words like; "valuable, worth it, wanted, unique, treasured, awesome,"etc. We then invited the neighborhood to come to the Delridge Park for a free BBQ and school supply giveaway. The astonishing numberof people/families that showed up served as confirmation there was indeed a great need. We gave away as many bags of supplies and prizes that we had available, played games with the kids, and fed as many as we could. However, the best part of this event was meeting new people, building relationships with them, and expressing how much they are appreciated.

   Every year since we have continued the School Supply Giveaway adding movies, concerts, and prizes including: kindles, free tutoring, flash drives and other gifts that can help students grow.  Three year ago a volunteer hot lunch program was started at the local alternative school where students aren't offered hot food, but desperately need it. We have found nothing builds relationships better than conversations over a meal. The Watering Can's missions have grown so much and so fast we need to reach outside of our small group in order to increase our capacity to reach troubled youth and families. The need is great, but the solution is greater. So what's the solution? You are!  We believe  the heart and compassion of people just like you is the only way to break through and truly lift up our community. 

   We are trying to raise $4,000 dollars to help cover this year's School Supply Giveaway event as well as to fund the hot lunches for the next school year. The Watering Can is made up entirely of volunteers so we can guarantee  100% of the proceeds raised will go directly to the cause and not to any overhead. Together = more than enough.

   Here in Seattle where the rain clouds are plentiful; their showers water this area creating great opportunity for beauty and growth. Nevertheless, there are still some circumstances where a watering can is necessary; to bring that specific outpour to a specific need. That's who we are! Just as a watering can delivers a life-needed-drip to a thirsty plant, so are we determined to bring living water to a thirsty people.
