MYA'S STORY

Mya is 5 years old. She is a very happy, bright and bubbly little girl who is full of energy and was born with an undeveloped brain. Mya is a very strong minded little girl who is determined to do what ever it takes to get her body to move. Unfortunately she has Cerebral Palsy due to her brain condition, which means as much as she tries, her disability limits the movements in her legs. As a result, she over uses other muscles, causing her tightness and sometimes pain.
Mya has worked hard in the last 5 years to learn how to crawl, sit, stand with aid and walk with a walking frame. These movements have not come naturally to Mya, with constant weekly therapy helping her achieve her milestones. Mya has three older siblings and is desperately trying to keep up with them and her school friends. She loves the outdoors but sometimes is limited to where her walker can take her.
I have always wanted the best for my little girl and given her the best possible care and support she requires. I have come across life changing surgery that is being performed with incredible success at The Centre for Cerebral Palsy, St Louis Children’s Hospital, in Missouri USA. We are only given one chance at life and I believe that this surgery will be a life changer for Mya.
I have researched for many months and worked with Mya’s specialist and therapist for pre-surgery and rehabilitation assessments, and with this an application has been put through for Mya to have Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery. This surgery is performed by the most experienced Neurosurgeon in the world, Dr T S Park, who has performed surgery on over 3600 patients from over 72 countries. This SDR surgery will permanently reduce spasticity, by cutting the nerve rootlets in Mya’s spinal cord. SDR surgery will stop any pain associated with movements, as well as minimise future deterioration of her body caused by spasticity. Without this, Mya may lose any ability to walk and therefore be confined to using a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
This surgery is going to take a lot of commitment and hard work, but I am willing to do whatever it takes to give Mya the best chance in order to get the best results from SDR surgery. It will take a further six months of daily intensive rehabilitation when she gets home. I am willing to put in as much hard work as the therapist and use my knowledge as a personal trainer to help Mya.
I have created this page to gain support through pledges of donations to reach Mya’s fundraising target and to raise awareness for Cerebral Palsy.
Thank you to all who are here in support of Mya’s future.
