My transfer case went BOOM!

I don't have to tell you how hard it's been to be a member of The Middle Class lately, especially if you're 50+, and even more so if you're in Radio.

Both my wife and I work full-time jobs and we're still living paycheck to paycheck. We live a no frills lifestyle.

Currently, we're in the process of a modification of our mortgage, which will save our home, but we've had a bit of a bump in the road which puts that in jeopardy.

Yesterday, without warning, the transfer case in my car decided to eat itself. The reason was mismatched tires, which I did not know could cause such a catastrophic mechanical failure. The car is full time all wheel drive. I just recently scraped together enough money to replace 2 tires, which did not match the other 2, but the tires that were originally on the car were also mismatched. That's the way I bought the car when my previous transportation died of old age 6 months ago.

I have a good friend in the transmission business and had the car towed directly to his shop, which was 42 miles from my breakdown point. Roadside assistance covered only 15 miles of the tow. My share was $135. Lost half a day of work yesterday and the entire day today (Thursday) while I try to sort this all out.

The cost of this repair is $3500. That sounds like a lot, I know, but anyone else at this shop would pay considerably more. It's nice to have good friends in high places. In order to guarantee this repair I would have to buy 2 more tires to match the 2 I just bought. That adds another couple of hundred. That and my lost wages from not having transportation to work until the car is fixed is how I came up with the round figure of $5000. That will also cover the 5% fee to GoFundMe.

I need to resolve this quickly in order to keep my job, which is 45 miles from home. In the mean time I'm working on a combination of public transportation and Uber to get me to and from. My 90 minute rush hour commute just turned into a much more expensive 3-4 hour commute using the above method.

If I don't work, we lose the mortgage modification. If we lose the modification, we lose the house. I'm not looking for a penny more than I need just to get me back to yesterday with a running car.

While I am embarrassed that it has come to this, I'm heartened by the fact that there are many other people in the same boat who have been buoyed by their friends in their time of need. If there is anything I can do in return for your generosity, just name it. I will be there for you.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of our plight and anything you can contribute to help get us out of this mess. It will be appreciated more than you know.
