My Fight to Beat Pancreatic Cancer

$31,121 of $30,000 goal

Raised by 312 people in 3 months
Hi Everyone,

As some of you may already be aware I was diagnosed suddenly with Pancreatic Cancer in early April. I have been in hospital since the diagnosis awaiting testing and ensuring that my health did not deteriorate any further.

As you can imagine, being relatively healthy with the exception of acid reflux up until this diagnosis, the news has hit me and my family in a manner that no one can prepare for.

Currently the cancer in inoperable as it has grown to encompass some critical arteries that prevent surgical intervention. However, they are hopeful that with chemo-therapy the mass may shrink enough to allow for surgical removal. Currently the pancreatic mass also encompasses my spleen, several arteries and bundles of nerves in my back and abdomen.

If the chemo I successful and surgery is possible then the possibility of extending my life up to 5 years increases to about 27%. I am aiming for that success!!!

The prognosis if the chemo is not successful is about 3-12 months on average.

Although I have both provincial healthcare and work health benefits, coverages are very limited when it comes to home health care, and costs for most alternative therapy or alternative nerve pain medications are not covered.  The cost of in home medical nursing care is not fully covered as well. I currently require a feeding tube and additional medical assistance on a regular basis that will continue to be required once out of hospital until a few months after surgery.

As a result, I have decided to do something I historically have never been good at, I have decided to ask for help. It was recommended for me to start a go-fund me account in the hopes of being able to off-set and keep up with the costs associated with care that are not covered, while I go through Chemo for the next 3 months and then recover from what is described as extensive internal surgery to remove numerous organs if the chemo is successful.

As someone who si a very personally private person, who has spent his whole life caring for and fighting for everyone else, I have never been so humbled as to have to write such a personal story and hope that any assistance that anyone is able to offer would be greatly appreciated and accepted.  Please feel free to share this post on your Facebook to ensure that I haven't missed any friends I am trying to reach that may not be on my account.

With love, respect and admiration please help and join me in this fight.

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, let me say I am so humbled beyond words at the amount of support that all of you have offered in donations and also in kind words, emails and messages.

I have been home since Easter weekend and adjusting to dealing with life's new path and circumstances that I am on.

I am only able to eat and drink through a nasal-jejunal tube, as I am unable to swallow food or liquids due to the tumor not allowing food or liquids to pass my stomach. This means that I am required to eat and drink non stop 24hrs a day in order to get enough nutrients and liquids to attempt to prevent losing more weight which could compromise my ability to do chemotherapy. This means that I have to sleep sitting up in order for food and liquid to continue to be processed and not back up or choke me in the night.

I have been able to use some of your donations to purchase a hospital bed and other equipment for the house which allows me to do these feedings 24hrs a day while at the same time get the proper rest I need.

Unfortunately I am still not able to get enough liquids into my system to prevent dehydration via the feed tube. So 3 x a week nursing staff come to the house and start IV liquids on me in order to prevent further dehydration. I am so grateful for everything that all of you have done to help me.

This morning I completed all my chemotherapy blood work and on Monday the 6th they will surgically install a port line in my chest which is how my chemo which starts Wed the 8th will be delivered.

The true battle starts next week, ladies and gentlemen and because of your kindness, love, support and compassion, we believe we are ready for what lies ahead.

I have and will continue to work each day representing my members as President of our Union as it gives me focus, drive and purpose. I have and will continue to attend meetings in person and via conference calls. I also had the pleasure this week of teaching a group of new hire Flight Attendants our collective agreement. I also have my focus on being back in the air flying asap and to ensure I am ready I attended my annual flight attendant recertification training last week and earned my wings for another year!

with much love, respect and admiration

April 23, 2019 UPDATE

Hi Everyone,

Well I had my first chemo consult yesterday.

They will be installing an under the skin port in the next week or so to begin my chemo. They are going to start me on an intensive and strong level of chemo due to my young age, and how aggressive they need to be. So they were preparing me for the side effects one can expect and anticipate.
My chemo will be a 5 hrs treatment followed by a take home 48 hr slow infusion chemo drip, then 12 days of rest and repeat.
The chemo HAS to work on shrinking this tumor or else I do not qualify for surgical intervention and become palliative care, and that is not an option I am willing to accept.

I am continuing to work on Union work from home attend meetings in person and on conference call and stay busy as it's critical for my mental health and staying focused.

I want to take a moment to say how truly amazed and feel so overwhelmed at how many people participated in raising funds in the go-fund-me account. I can't believe we have almost reached the goal in under 3 weeks, It is never an easy thing for anyone to reach out for help, and for those who know me, I am the one who is there to help, not the one who asks for it.

I have now been on a feeding tube for about 2.5 weeks and will continue to be on one until at least Aug when surgery is scheduled. In addition I am not able to drink liquids due to the tumour and it blocking liquids through my stomach. Home care is being arranged so that IV fluids can be given to ensure that i don't become dehydrated. I am doing everything I can to try and gain some of the weight lost due to this cancer over the past month to be prepared for Chemo.

I may have cancer, but I am not letting it have me!

April 18th Happy Easter Weekend

Hi Everyone,

I am still so amazed at how incredibly generous all of you have been in helping to push me closer to the fundraiser goal, these funds will assist with many different things, from alternative pain therapy, and furniture to eventually nursing assistance at home when it becomes needed.

For those who don't know after almost 3 weeks in hospital I finally got to come home today, just in time for the holiday weekend.

On Monday I have my oncologist appointment to advise me of the type of chemo treatment that I will be starting and if it will require a PICC line or other specific requirements.

My husband has been my rock, he has been there every day and when I emotionally hit bottom, he was there to lift me back up and help me refocus on the amazing journey that lies ahead.

I also want to thank Jennifer Kalmar, she has been my VPWest since I took office as President almost 5 years ago. Almost every single day that I have been in Hospital she has spent each full work day in hospital with me, helping prepare upcoming Arbitrations and prepare for scheduled meetings. In addition her and her Husband Jim have been foster parenting our 3 little Frenchies since I was admitted to Hospital.

To those people who were able to stop by and visit me, write messages, emails, or calls, my heartfelt thanks. The fact that some people flew across the country to sit with me, left me in tears but in a forever grateful way. I am at home now, using my "jesus juice" and "golden girls" tumblers, and feeling so blessed to have each and every one of you in my life.

This weekend I will rest.....as the real battle starts early next week!

Recent Update:

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to thank each and everyone of you who has taken the time to make a donation or even send a kind word, email or text.

I can not believe we have raised 74% of the target goal in 5 days.... I am beyond words and overwhelmed with emotion. The fact with all of your love and support we are almost at our goal is truly incredible.

When the Dr's give you a cancer diagnosis with a 1% survival rate, it's hard to fathom the things that go through your mind..... when you add to that the typical life expectancy is 3-12months, it begins to make you realize that time is a luxury that must be respected.

As I mentioned before, in its current state the cancer mass cannot be removed as the surgery would kill me. However the Dr's believe that with Chemo and a positive outlook, I could shrink the mass enough to allow for surgical removal. (My current GOALS!!)

If they can shrink it with CHEMO and remove it with Surgery, they believe I could be in the 27% who live up to an extra 5 years!!

So, please I ask all of you as I start Chemo next week to please keep in contact with me: text or email.

While in Hospital, I have continued to work as Union President attending conference calls and preparing Arbitrations, as my Dr's understand how important my work is to me and how much taking care of my airline family is a passion for me. In fact my Dr's encourage me to stay focused on my work and what I am fighting for and not to focused on what I am fighting against!

So by all means please keep in touch, feel free to email, text or call.
