My 91 yr old aunt lost her home

$6,371 of $56,000 goal

Raised by 67 people in 13 months
Mexico City and its outlying areas were struck by a devastating earthquake on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. Hundreds lost their lives and many were left with nothing. While I am thankful that no one in my immediate family was hurt, my 91-year-old aunt and my brother Carlos, my aunt’s caretaker, lost their home.  The apartment building where they live was condemned as it is in imminent danger of collapse. My family suffered a considerable loss. Besides their home, my aunt lost memories and heirlooms, and my brother lost his workplace. Your help can make a big difference right now.

They are both staying at my mom’s home temporarily. But even though my family has shown incredible resilience through the earthquake’s aftermath, they are all still grappling with the devastation, as there are people from at least other 400 severely affected buildings just in their same neighborhood.

To help restore some of what my family members have lost, I have set up this page seeking $56,000 USD to cover their immediate expenses, basic needs, clothing, medicines, medical treatments, re-issue of documents and identifications, seed money to restart my brother’s business, and a down payment or rent for their next permanent home.  This is the one thing I can do while they begin the arduous task of returning to their normal lives.  Anything beyond this goal we will donate to trusted institutions helping those affected by the two earthquakes and two hurricanes that struck Mexico in the first twenty days of September.

This is a desperate and unexpected situation in our lives, and especially for my aunt who has restricted movement and hearing loss, and I am sure that every peso and every dollar that you can pitch in will go a long way. We will be wholeheartedly and forever thankful for anything you can give.

Thank you for all your support and for being a very important part in my family’s recovery. Please help me spread the word.

Hello Friends and Family,
I wanted to give you an update of the current situation. My aunt Ana and my brother Carlos moved out of my mom's condo into a rental apartment and are going thru all the moving logistics – move tel, sign up for utilities, etc. You know… it’s never simple to move. They are settling in that apartment temporarily until we can find them a permanent place. The location is not the best for my aunt Ana because the streets are big and busy avenues that make it difficult and dangerous to walk around. She loves to go out walking in regular basis. It is also a little bit far from my mom's condo, my mom has to drive instead of walk to visit her. However the apartment is wonderful and the fact that they can have their own space as well as allow my mom and sister to get back to their routines is priceless. Thank you @Betty and @Lupita Gutierrez for all your amazing support. We will be forever in your debt.
As far as the condo that was damaged by the earthquake. The project to install reinforced pillars to ensure it's safe to work on it, has initiated and will be completed soon. The next step is to build a restoration project plan which will take 2 to 3 months. The cost for both of these steps is around $1500 per unit and that is just the documents to know what needs to be done and how to rebuild it. We expect the cost of the repairs to be around 300K dlls for the whole building. It will be around 25K to 30K per unit. And the rebuilding project will probably take 18 to 24 months. This means that we have to pay repairs and rent (or a loan for a new permanent place) at the same time. We are going to have extra expenses for a year or two until we can sell the condo that will be repaired.
Thank you everyone for your support, it has been heartwarming and encouraging. Unfortunately we are still far from our goal. If you could support our GoFundMe campaign by making a donation and then sharing it with your network, we will greatly appreciate it. We know that money can be tight, so please know that even $5 help get us closer to our goal! Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll be happy to answer them.
Sincerely,
Agueda

Friends and Family,
I’m back from seeing my family in Mexico, I’m pleased to see that everyone is doing well notwithstanding the stress caused by the earthquake, by knowing that my aunt and my brother don’t have a home and by living in closed quarters in my mom’s apartment. During my stay in Mexico we arranged renting an apartment of a friend so my aunt and brother Carlos can have their own space. Also, we (Carlos, Mariana and I) met with the condo owners to review the plan for repairing the building. The costs for repair are being calculated between 240 to 300 thousand dollars for the building, not counting individual interiors. And it will take a long time as there are many other buildings that need repairs all over the city and adjacent states.

For those that have donated and/or shared the campaign on the social networks, I don’t have enough words to express my gratitude but I’ll give it a try: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Your kindness and support are humbling.

We still have ways to go to meet our campaign goal, everything counts and is much appreciated. Please share this campaign.

Sincerely,
Agueda

Dear Friends and Family Members - THANK YOU for all your support. I can't express enough with words how grateful we are for your love & support. Please share the campaign with others... we still have a long way to go.
Some of you asked to add the family members' names so people know who this is for. The campaign is for my aunt Anamaría (Ana) Gómez de la Parra and my brother Carlos Sánchez Gómez. Ana has 3 nephews - Carlos, Xavier, and Rubén and 2 nieces Agueda and Mariana. She is my mom's only sister and my brother lives with her.
I'm traveling to Mexico City this weekend to help look for their next home. I will post an update on my return.
Sincerely,
Agueda
