Music for Memory

Do you know anyone suffering with dementia Alzheimer's or Parkinson's Disease? Sadly, the chances are that you do. If so, then you know the torment and heartache of watching a loved one disappear before your eyes. Several elders afflicted with dementia have told tell me they feel they've lost themselves.

Music has been shown to improve mood, memory, mental acuity and physical comfort. It can spur non-verbal patients with dementia to speak again. It can even enhance smooth mobility in Parkinson's
patients.
In short, music has miraculous powers.

For the past 9 years, my mother has struggled with dementia. The one constant in her constantly changing condition is her ability to remember tunes and lyrics, and her obvious transformation when she hears and sings music.

Music & Memory is an organization dedicated to bringing music to eldercare facilities like the one in which my Mother lives.  Their mission and vision are clear and simple:

MUSIC & MEMORY℠ is a non-profit organization that brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm through digital music technology, vastly improving quality of life.

We train nursing home staff and other elder care professionals, as well as family caregivers, how to create and provide personalized playlists using iPods and related digital audio systems that enable those struggling with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories.

By providing access and education, and by creating a network of MUSIC & MEMORY℠ Certified elder care facilities, we aim to make this form of personalized therapeutic music a standard of care throughout the health care industry.

The Family Caregivers' Support Group at Fritz Reuter is a dynamic collective of children, spouses and friends of residents at Fritz Reuter Altenheim Lifetime Retirement Community in North Bergen, NJ.
Our goal is to raise  enough funds to provide 100 iPod Shuffles and headsets to the Assisted Living residents at Fritz Reuter.  Next month, Fritz will be hosting Music & Memory trainings for staff and caregivers. The program itself will be launched as soon as we can offer the devices to these low-income residents.

It is the sun and moon to see dementia patients come alive when they hear a favorite song. And music is nothing short of a lifeline to those afflicted. But you don't have to take my word for it:

In April 2012, a documentary about Music & Memory, Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory, was previewed at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City. A video clip of Henry, one of the residents reawakened by listening to his Cab Calloway favorites, went viral, now with more than 11 million views, boosting awareness and enthusiastic interest in our program.

Please help me help my Mother and her neighbors find themselves  again.

Your deeply appreciated help will set the place to singing! Thank you from the bottom of our musical hearts.

Sincerely and Gratefully,
