Mulberry Fields Children's Garden

$700 of $33,000 goal

Raised by 6 people in 12 months
For the longest time, the children's play area at Mulberry Fields has consisted of an old concrete slab and plastic toys that are donated by the community.  It has been a long time dream of the volunteers who have the led the way at Mulberry Fields for over 20 years to have a children's play area in the southwest corner that engages all of the senses.  Working with the Friends of Mulberry Fields, Wylde Center has created a unique play scape that will do just that.

Your donation will go towards the demolition of the existing concrete slab and the installation of elements such as:
- a covered, elevated stage and seating pavilion
- a sand area for play that engages all of the senses
- a slide and climbing net and other elements to climb and explore
- play structures that promote balance and focus
- features that mimic natural spaces in the garden
- rain gardens to mitigate and educate

More about Mulberry Fields

Mulberry Fields is a unique oasis in the in-town neighborhood of Candler Park in Atlanta. We are located down an old city alley next to 1301 Iverson St. Follow the alley until it opens up to a magical space where many things await your discovery.

Open to the public every day and supported by donations from the community, the acre of open meadow, mulberry grove and towering old pecan trees offer an accessible green space for recreation, environmental education, community building and organic growing. Flowers, vegetables, and herbs grow in abundance attracting several species of birds, insects, and small animals to make this their home.  Art is scattered throughout the garden creating areas where nature and the artistic intersect.

Children and their families flock to visit the goats and chickens, play in the meadow and on the basketball court, and walk through the garden plots. Twenty-five households from Candler Park and Lake Claire rent plots growing a great diversity of vegetables and flowers. Play groups for mothers and toddlers regularly meet in the meadow. Children discover the wonder of growing their own food and learn about the life cycle of plants insects, birds, trees and flowers.

In the later part of the 1800’s Mulberry Fields was part of a dairy farm, and the oldest farm house was built on the west end of the property – it still stands today.  In 1999 the land was saved from development by the purchase of the parcels by two neighbors who started the community garden. The garden was named after a beloved goat, Mulberry. In 2007, the land was placed in a conservation easement securing its continuity as green space and protecting it from development. In 2016, the owners of the land partnered with Wylde Center to assume the management of Mulberry Fields.
