Mt. Everest Biogas Construction

Thank you for your interest in the Mt. Everest Biogas Project.  We are a 100% volunteer organization that is working to clean up the impact of human waste on Mt. Everest.
Every year more than 12 tons of human waste is carried off the mountain and dumped near a small tea-house village of Gorak Shep, Nepal.  Today, there is no feasible alternative.  The dumping of untreated human waste has a tragic effect on the fragile landscape and is a health hazard for the Sherpa people who live in the region. It has been accumulating for decades and the volume will only increase as the popularity of the region grows among climbers from around the world.  Obviously, a solution is critical to ensure that the wilderness area that surrounds Mt. Everest is restored and that the Nepalese people are protected.
After seven years of engineering design and lab testing, we have designed a method for human waste disposal using a high altitude biogas system.  Our design uses off-the-shelf, low technology components that are available in Nepal and can survive the extreme cold environment of Gorak Shep.  We are ready to build this biogas system at the base of Mt. Everest.  By-products of the project are methane gas for cooking or lighting and fertilizer.  Ultimately, the biogas system will be  turned over to the Nepalese Sherpas to own and operate.

When implemented, the Mount Everest Biogas Project will be a first-of-its-kind: the highest altitude solar-powered human waste biogas system in the world. Once proven as sustainable, it can be replicated in other high altitude wilderness environments.

The Mt. Everest Biogas Project will benefit the environment; the health of the Sherpa community; and the Gorak Shep economy where it will be built.   During construction, the biogas project will utilize a local Nepali contracting company, local labor and materials for building the biogas digester and shelter, resulting in dozens of jobs. Following construction, these economic benefits will continue by  offering long-term employment for residents of Gorak Shep to operate and maintain the biogas system, thus bringing income to the Khumbu region still recovering from the devastating 2015 earthquake.

As a small non-profit 501(C)(3) organization we have a big job ahead of us, but our work has not gone unnoticed. In 2017, the Mt. Everest Biogas Project was formally recognized for its visionary solution by the International Climbing and Mountaineering Foundation (UIAA) and was awarded the Mountain Protect Award.

The project is now construction-ready with ground breaking taking place as early as Spring 2018. To bring this essential project to life, the Mount Everest Biogas Project needs your help.

Our GoFundMe goal of raising $15,000 will bring our final design to construction-ready by paying for the conversion of the engineering drawings  from U.S. standards – which were developed by our team of Seattle-based Engineers and Architects - to Nepalese construction standards. The funding will also help us finalize subcontracts with Nepalese companies and start long lead procurement of the biogas system components.

The Mt. Everest Biogas Project will continue as an all-volunteer organization. Every dime raised will go for the construction of the biogas system at the base of Mt. Everest.

Please donate today.   And also help us by forwarding this GoFundMe campaign to your friends and associates who may share your concern for the environment and the Nepalese communities.  The Nepalese community at Gorak Shep and the Mt. Everest Biogas Project volunteer members thank you.
