Chris's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Cheryl and I have been engaged to a man named Chris for 4 years, together for 7 years!  We have blended our families and started a business together 3 years ago and life was a blessing!!

About 4 months ago, Chris started experiencing some upper back discomfort, brushed it off, as most men do!  He received a few adjustments over the this time from a Chiropractor and it would feel better for a very limited time.  On Monday the 14th of December (2015) he went in for another adjustment and on that day our lives changed forever.  A long story short, Chris was, that same week, diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer and was out of nowhere, paralyzed from the waste down.  The next day he had to have a 4 hour surgery to repair his spine from a cancerous tumor that was the basis for his recent back discomfort.  The cancer has spread to his spine.

As of today, Chris is taking treatments for the cancer and is being monitored closely.  He has been at SMH rehab therapy for the last 2 weeks and will be there another 3 weeks.  We hope to have him independent enough to transfer his self from the wheelchair to the bed, bath, etc.  He is making AMAZING progress.

What my concerns are, is when he comes home.  We live in a 2 story condo with all the bedrooms upstairs.  I have no problem moving our bedroom into the living room and just rearranging things, but our home is not wheelchair accessible.  We only have a half bath downstairs and at this point need to make it into a full bath.   He will need to have all the safety equipment that makes a home liveable for a person in a wheelchair.

I believe with everything I have, that his faith and determination will lead him to walk again one day.  Friends of ours shared their personal experiences with us about their own journeys of being in a wheelchair and unable to walk for a year or more.  We would have never known!  I believe it's all within each individual to make that decision, not always a medical diagnosis.

I would love for him to continue therapy after they discharge him from the hospital so his chances increase to reach his goal.   He did not have Insurance when all this began, but a woman at SMH was able to enroll him into Medicaid.  I have no idea what they are going to cover, but my concerns are for him to come home and feel like he can function and be comfortable in his home.  He is the epidomy of a "home body"!!

I have never heard of this site and am amazed that it exists and that people are willing to extend their time and help others.  But since all  this has happened, alot of people, and occurances have taken place that I honestly can't explain except that prayers ARE answered.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read our story and for your consideration to help.  God Bless!
