Mozambique Diaster Relief

$4,874 of $3,000 goal

Raised by 174 people in 4 months
Created March 21, 2019
On 14 March 2019, Cyclone Idai made landfall in south east Africa nations of Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. The impact of the storm has left many thousands without food, shelter, clothing, clean water, and other necessities of life. Mozambique’s fourth largest city, Beira, with a population of 540,00, has been 90% destroyed.  As a result, the devastation is known as the worst humanitarian crisis in Mozambique’s history.

It should go without saying that the humanitarian crisis is great and aid is urgently needed. I have been able to coordinate with a compassionate sister, Jessica Mkabongo, who I know personally, in Johannesburg, South Africa that will be heading to Beria, Mozambique on 5 April 2019 to assist in relief efforts there. Originally, Jessica and I discussed shipping supplies from the U.S. to Johannesburg, however, we cannot guarantee packages will arrive in time for her to travel to Mozambique. Therefore, we are requesting those who can to donate to this campaign which will allow Jessica to purchase needed items in South Africa to take with her to Beira.

Time is not a luxury we have. Therefore, this will be a quick campaign to allow Jessica time to purchase and pack well in advance of her travel to Mozambique. We are seeking to secure $3000 USD by 31 March 2019.

Below is a list of some items we are seeking to purchase through Jessica:

Underwear

Antibiotic cream

Mosquito nets

Personal water cleaner

Lifestraw

Cloth Diapers

Book bags

I would like to take the time to express thanks and gratitude to all who contributed and assisted with this campaign, as it is with your help that we not only met the goal, but exceeded it. We are able to assist in three nations! This will allow the funds to be distributed in the following ways:
1. allow Jessica (a personal friend in South Africa; mentioned in the initial description of the campaign) and her team to purchase needed supplies for distribution in Beria, Mozambique
2. assist the Rotaract Club of Limbe in Malawi in their relief efforts in Malawi; whom I was placed in contact by a sister from Malawi.
3. contribution made to The Graça Machel Trust in Johannesburg, South Africa who issued an urgent international appeal for relief for Mozambique and Zimbabwe on 24 March 2019 and reported on AllAfrica.com. Upon reading the article, I reached out to GMT to offer assistance for the present moment and how I can be of assistance going forward.
I have the been in contact with each party for the duration of this campaign and they have provided me with their points of contacts, account numbers, and physical addresses to receive aid to meet the humanitarian need left in the wake of Cyclone Idai. The GoFundMe funds will be deposited to the account of Gene Bazemore and then sent to the parties above.

Thank you all once again for your efforts and contributions; working together to meet life challenges for those in need.

@rotaract_limbe is a non profit org located in Blantyre, Malawi with a belief “that we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s most persistent issues.” I believe the devastation caused by Cyclone Idai qualifies as such.

@rotaract_limbe is currently running a campaign to aid those who were affected by Cyclone Idai in Malawi. Overages of the donations collected for Mozambique will be split behind Malawi and Zimbabwe to aid our people in those nations as well. @rotaract_limbe will receive the donation as they are in Malawi and on the ground assisting where they can. Feel free to visit their page and website to learn more about them.
