The Bucyrus Heritage Museum was originally opened in a legacy building on the South Milwaukee campus of Bucyrus International in 2009. The display was open to the public, and documented the company’s 130+ year history as a world leader in the mining and construction equipment industry, including steam shovels used to build the Panama Canal and the world’s largest mobile land machines.

Caterpillar purchased Bucyrus in 2011, and in December 2016 permanently closed the Museum and Heritage Building. In 2017 the South Milwaukee Industrial Museum (SMIM) was formed to archive and protect the available assets of the former Bucyrus Heritage Museum. With volunteer help, 95% of the original display items were saved as a group, and moved into a temporary storage facility.

SMIM’s  board has an initial funding goal to cover the costs of the move, interim storage, and cataloging of the 100's of models, artifacts, pictures, parts and displays that had been on display in the Bucyrus Heritage Museum has been met.  Our current fund raising efforts are focused on securing a permanent public facility to once again publicly display the historical artifacts that tell Bucyrus’ story. Funds will also help cover the costs of rent and re-establishing the electronic interactive and educational displays when the new home facility is opened.

The picture shows one of the traveling public educational displays that SMIM provides at no charge to South Milwaukee and surrounding area venues to showcase Bucyrus’ century old heritage in the local communities. This display was at the South Milwaukee Public Library last fall.
