This is Kip.  He was born 5 weeks premature with tracheoesophogeal fistula, atresia, and tracheomalacia.  That’s a mouthful, but it means his airway and esophagus needed to be separated and as a result he has a weak or floppy section of his airway.  He was flown by helicopter to Minneapolis for surgery just hours after birth and spent the first two months of his life in the children’s hospital healing, growing, and trying to learn in short order what full-term babies already have figured out.  The situation was quite overwhelming and the best care for Kip was hours from home for his mom, dad, and 3yr old brother Talon.

After two months in the hospital Kip came home to his family.  To reduce his chances of contacting a respiratory illness (which is very difficult for someone with tracheomalacia to recover from) Kip needed around the clock in-home care.  With no other options Ty took an unpaid leave from his job in September to care for Kip.  At times Kip would turn blue and would need to be repositioned for his airway to open again and allow him to breathe properly.

On the evening of 11-23-16 Kip quit breathing.  Crystal had to administer CPR to revive him.  He was immediately transported via Gold Cross Ambulance to St. Luke’s and then back to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis for more specialized care and observation.

Kip is currently at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis waiting to be transported to Boston Children’s Hospital.  Boston is the only hospital in the U.S. that performs the surgery that Kip needs (posterior tracheopexy) to allow this airway to remain open to allow him to breathe.  Through this surgery the flexible back wall of the trachea will be supported against his spine.  He will be flown to Boston on January 2nd where he will undergo a week of testing with surgery to follow.  Kip, along with his mom and dad, will have to spend an additional month or so in Boston post-surgery to make sure that it is successful and without complications.  During this time they will be away from their son Talon who will be waiting for them back home.

This has been an extremely stressful time for Ty and Crystal and their family.  They have been separated for many months dealing with income loss, medical bills, and travel expenses that are piling up with no end in sight.

Please consider a donation to help Ty and Crystal with the mounting medical bills, travel expenses, lost wages, and other expenses they face while their son Kip is at Children’s Hospital awaiting this surgery.
