And just like that..... a visit to her doctor confirmed her fear. It was cancer. Breast Cancer. That filthy, disgusting, son-of-a bitch word. Nothing could bring you to your knees faster than looking in your daughter's face and questioning what is going to happen to you next. How do I explain to her I have cancer? She knows what that is... we've seen people who have cancer. How am I going tell her and not break down and cry? How am I going to do this?
That's a day I wish I could take away from my cousin Kelly. Along with every other bad day she's had since then. But, that day runs in my mind over and over. My heart broke for her that day.
I also think how easily this could be me or YOU.....
When you follow Kelly's face book page, (and I highly encourage you to follow her page) you will see a beautiful woman with a huge heart. She is strong and is motivated by her daughter Samantha and husband Matt. Kelly has an infectious laugh and is very easy to talk to. If you don't know her, following her page will make you want to know her.
Since her diagnosis, I have learned that the process to effectively rid cancer out of your body is extremely long and evasive. However, if you didn't read her story you would never know as Kelly tends to look amazing in every picture! Hair or no hair. Unfortunately, with Kelly's Fight I have witnessed the steps and reality of what a young breast cancer patient has to go through... and it is nothing short of heroic.
To date, my amazing cousin has had both of her breasts removed, expanders put in that will slowly be filled for future breast surgery,
4 Rounds of Chemotherapy, and she is currently doing 12 weeks of Taxol chemo treatment in Philadelphia.
Ahead of Kelly is radiation, surgery that will take muscle from her back and place it in her chest, and her ovaries removed. Reconstructive surgery is set for later this year!
So, today I'm asking whoever is reading this to please donate to a cause we all know too well. You can donate to Kelly so that her family can feel the comfort of having funds for ongoing expenses and to spend some more family time together with their beautiful daughter Samantha.
Or, donate because you know one of the amazing people running the Morristown Saint Paddy's 5k on March 16th for Kelly. They have joined a team to run a 5k for my dear cousin while also raising awareness for women/men affected by breast cancer.
