Morrisons Volunteer on Mercy Ships
We're excited to announce we have been accepted aboard Mercy Ships!!!
Briana will be serving as a Staff Training Facilitator and Will as System Administrator aboard the Africa Mercy ship.
What is it?
Mercy Ships is a global charity which has operated a fleet of hospital ships in developing nations since 1978. The goal is to bring hope and healing to some of the most marginalized people in the world by providing free surgical services to the poor and medical training for health care professionals. Mercy Ships follows the 2000-year-old model of Jesus, bringing hope and healing to the world’s forgotten poor. Hospital ships are used to transform individuals and serve nations, one at a time.
We will be working aboard the Africa Mercy, which as the name suggests, serves the nations of the African continent, typically spending about 10 months in each country. In the next year, the Africa Mercy will be going to the country of Benin in West Africa.
What will we be doing?
Although neither of us are physicians, it takes people with all kinds of skills to keep the work of Mercy Ships going. We are excited to be able to apply our skills and knowledge to support Mercy Ships' life-transforming work.
While on board, Briana will be serving as a Staff Training Facilitator. She'll be responsible for the design, planning, and coordination of training programs to meet the needs of the ship community. She'll also be involved in mentoring managers, facilitating language training, tutoring for basic math and English, and leading excursions to build cultural awareness.
Will's position will be as System Administrator. He will be taking care of the ships computers and networking backbone. Both Briana and Will are likely to take on other responsibilities, as needed.
Why are we raising funds?
Every Mercy Ships volunteer pays their own way so that every dollar donated to the organization can go directly to help the world's forgotten poor. Although we’ve been saving money for this purpose, we would not be able to serve long before our limited funds run out. We’re asking our family and friends to partner with us to help extend our stay and impact more lives.
Mercy Ships estimates that our joint monthly expenses will be about $1800/month, which covers room, board, and basic health insurance. We are hoping to stay with Mercy Ships through June 2018. Together with one-time costs such as training and air fare, the total amount we will need is $36,400. We're putting our personal savings towards this goal, but we need to raise an additional $16,400 in one-time and recurring gifts to get us through June 2018.

When will we go?
The next available Crew and Staff Training in Texas starts in September, and we will be serving with Mercy Ships by mid-October. The ship is scheduled to be in Benin through June 2017, and then it will travel to an unannounced country.
