More Girls Into Coding!

Donation protected
Hello!

My name is Avye (http://10tonolimit.com/). In July 2018, I will be organising a Girl Only Coding Event at Wimbledon library in association with Wimbletech and I will need your help!

But first, let me tell you a little bit about myself:

I am a 10 year old coder. I started coding at 7. Most Saturdays I either attend a code group or I’m busy leading a micro:bit workshop for Coder Dojo.  In November 2017, I won the ‘best working device’ for the Micro:bit 1st Birthday Challenge & my robot was exhibited at the Bett Show in January. In February, I was selected to be part of 12 young coders for a Young Coders Conference at the Tate Modern. We delivered 4 new workshops to the public.

For the last two years. I have been attending technology / coding workshops. I absolutely love them – I’ve been introduced to so many cool things - like Scratch; the Microbit; Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Pi-Top, Unity; App Maker; App Design & electronic components which can be controlled using code. I am also fortunate enough to have attended some large technology events, such as the Coolest Project in Dublin, MozFest and Bett in London.

I was most inspired by workshops being run by other kids that looked around the same age as me. Seeing them help other kids & some adults was fantastic & was a real boost – it made me feel even more positive about my interest in tech. I now run my own coding workshops while still attending others.  I love tech. I use the knowledge & skills gained to collaboratively develop & deliver tech based workshops & other learning opportunities for other children.

I want to become a visible role model for young people in general, particularly for girls. I want to inspire more girls to get into coding  and to encourage more girl involvement in tech!

I believe a good way to get more girls involved in the world of STEAM is to take the lead yourself. So here I am! I decided to be proactive and organise (with the help of my parents) a Girl Only Coding Event for 15 young girls aged from 9 to 14  in July 2018. With two other mentors, we will run 3 coding workshops (I will lead one of them) where the Microbit and the Raspberry Pi, (pocket size computers) will be used in the projects.  There will also be  lightning talks from key proponents. At the end of the session, each of the girls will be awarded a Tech package that will contain:

- 1 x BBC Microbit Starter Kit  , worth £15
- 1 x Inventor's Kit  worth £25
- 1 x Girls Who Code book   , worth £10

The additional  Operating Costs will be approximately  £200 to make the project a success.

Hopefully, this will allow them to continue coding at home; encourage them to join a coding club or to create their own or to inspire other girls to code!

I am very passionate about this project!

I am now raising money to be able to provide the 15 girls with exciting tech packages and to cover the operating cost. I really hope you can support me in making this event a success and ultimately helping me in getting more girls into coding / Tech!

Here are some Key indicators that show we’re deprived of the talents and potential contributions of millions of women/girls due to clear gender-based discrepancies in STEM education and occupations

The gender gap in STEM education is striking. In higher education, only 35% of all students enrolled in STEM-related fields are females.

Enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3%); natural sciences, mathematics and statistics (5%); as well as engineering, manufacturing and construction (8%). Participation is highest in health and welfare (15%) studies.

In Europe, only 29 of 1,000 female graduates had a degree in computing in 2015, and just four out of 1,000 went on to have ICT careers.

We are still faced with a lack of representation of women in STEM and many other barriers that keep women and girls from fully participating.  Hopefully, you agree with this statement and you agree this needs to change! Please support me by giving what you can!

If you wish to participate in this event, it will be advertised shortly on Eventbrite.

Thank you for your support!
