Please Help - John Cody Needs Life-Saving Care

Acclaimed Canadian songwriter and musician John Cody has had an extremely tough last few years due to complicated illnesses, mental trauma, and the resulting financial strain. We want to give him a hand by helping to pay for the in-home care he requires before and after his next surgery in August 2019. Due to the Quebec government’s restrictions on crowdfunding, this campaign will only run for exactly one month.
A slew of related medical conditions and resulting surgeries ended John’s music career about four years ago. This includes colon cancer, which led to cancer of the larynx that stripped him of his singing voice. He also suffers from a severe degenerative neuromuscular disease that has robbed him of his mobility. He is currently at high risk for stroke, pulmonary embolism, and heart attack. His next surgery is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 23, 2019, though that may change depending on emergency tachycardia or diabetic episodes. There is also potential for a more invasive surgery if it’s determined that his liver is too large.
To add to his worsening physical condition, John recently had to confront past trauma caused by sexual abuse from his high school music teacher. John is one of several victims who bravely came forward last year. Bob Clarke has now plead guilty and been sentenced for sexually assaulting eight former students, including John. The scandal is the subject of the CBC podcast, The Band Played On.
Despite the mental trauma the trial brought back, the one silver lining (if it can be called that) was that John was eligible to receive a sum of money from the Ontario Criminal Injuries Compensation Board. John hoped this money would help with the costs of therapy related to sexual assault, as well as in-home care. That program was then slashed by the Doug Ford administration and, along with it, the money that was needed for care associated with his upcoming operation.
John is in desperate need of financial assistance due to the continually worsening health conditions that have ended his career. For obvious reasons, John can no longer work and lives on an incredibly modest disability. Even with a few solvent years as a composer in the music industry after his cancer diagnosis, he was unable to keep up with the bills and returned to Canada after having lived and worked in Los Angeles for over two decades. While many medical expenses are alleviated in Canada, many are not.
Over the next couple months, as he prepares for and recovers from his next surgery, John will need to pay for in-home care, liquid diet and nutrient supplies, and sanitary and basic living products.
Though by necessity he lives a very modest lifestyle with minimal financial help, living in near-poverty adds to his deteriorating health conditions. Over the last 30 years, John’s impressive career and repertoire has brought joy to countless music fans, even if they didn’t know his name, as well as the fellow musicians who love and respect him. It is a shame to see someone in our industry of John’s importance being forced into such a difficult situation through no fault of his own.

ABOUT JOHN CODY’S MUSIC CAREER
John Cody’s many musical contributions and accomplishments include co-writing and touring with Tom Cochrane, as well as arranging and providing background vocals on the diamond-selling Mad Mad World album. Following that, John accepted a publishing deal in Los Angeles, where he lived for over 20 years. While there, John co-wrote the song “The Fundamental Things” for Bonnie Raitt’s platinum-selling album, Fundamental. He also wrote and recorded with Keith Urban, Lynn Miles, Sharon Stone, Christopher Ward, Larry Klein, Holly Cole, and many others. As the musical director for the infamous Hollywood hotspot Le Deux Café, John performed with countless legends like Joni Mitchell and Grace Jones and earned a reputation in L.A.’s music scene as a musician’s musician.
