First off thanks for taking the time to check out Monty's profile, we really do appreciate it!

About 2 weeks ago my dad brought Monty, my 6 yr. old Alaskan malamute, to Dave's to get his vaccinations up to date. While there the vet recommended we have him tested for heartworm.

"Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets in the United States and many other parts of the world. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. "(

Sadly Monty tested positive. In the early stages of the disease, many dogs show few symptoms or no symptoms at all. The longer the infection persists, the more likely symptoms will develop. For the past year or so we have noticed a change in Monty's activity. He is tired a lot, not really wanting to run around at all, he looked a little wider around the belly, but we just figured he was a fat boy. Little did we know these were all signs of the disease.

Luckily there is a treatment for the disease that may save his life, but it comes at a pretty hefty price. One we could have dodged if we had him on the preventative heartguard montly tabs. If your dogs are not on this, please get them on it now or you will be in my exact situation. The treatment is quiet extensive (several months). Just alone for blood work and chest x-rays we were quoted $600 today at the vet. After all the diagnostics are back the Dr. can plan Monty's treatment accordingly. That will range from $1500- $2000 depending on any complications that may arise. My parents are helping me out mainly, but to a reasonable extent given the circumstances. I'm asking for $1000 just to help get the treatment going as soon as possible. It will maybe be half of what the total cost is once everything is said and done. Unfortunately if I cannot get enough money raised we may have to look into the second option, and that will be having to put him down soon (as in a month or 2). The disease is progressive and time is not on Monty's side.

I was very emotional when I heard the news, instant waterfalls came pouring from my cheeks. I have had to put one of my babies to sleep in the past and I just can't imagine doing it a second time, not if I can do something to try and help. If you've had the pleasure of meeting Monty you already know what a great, loveable, gentle giant that he is. If you haven't met him your missing out. He  deserves to live, and to pass peacefully at a ripe old age, not by an army of dog killing worms. I'll do as much as I can to get him the help he desperately needs. He's very special to me and I hope and pray every day he makes it through this. I know it’s a lot to ask for and I don't usually do this kind of thing but I will do anything for my babies. We all have struggles and challenges we go through ourselves but please, please think about helping my boy Monty! Thanks for stopping by and please spread the word throughout your social media platforms. #DogLoversUnite #MontyStrong

Hello supporters. Sorry I've been away from posting updates, I've been busy trying to end the school semester strong and just been pretty tired lately with work.

Onto the business.... We got the results back from Monty's X-rays and blood work last week. Some very good news and not so good news (but kinda expected). Good news first, X-rays show no swelling, enlargement, and no inflammation to his heart. Bad news is he does have mild inflammation and swelling in his lungs. From these x-rays and the info given to us from the vet, we can definitely say that the worms are matured and at adult length in his lungs. This is concerning as the worms can create a blockage in his lungs that in result could cause respiratory distress and become life threatening.

Because his heart is not yet affected we are going to go on and continue with the treatment plan our Vet has set up for Monty. (Email sent from Vet below)

I would like to again thank all the people who have donated, shared, and shown interest in Monty's road to recovery. I wouldn't be able to do this without all the support and love we have been receiving. Updates and pics to come.

The schedule that Monty would go through is:
1. First start heartworm preventative, possibly prednisone and doxycycline.
2. Two months after starting the above medications, he receives his first day of treatment. He goes home with pain medication and prednisone.
3. 1 month from the first day of treatment, he has 2 days of treatment. He can go home in between the days. He again goes home with pain medication and prednisone.

Through all of the treatment, he needs to be kept exercise restricted to prevent heartworm emboli in the lungs which is life threatening.

On Monty’s bloodwork, one of his liver values is elevated which is likely related to the heartworm disease. One of his white blood cells is elevated as well secondary to the heartworm disease. He also has microfliaria in his blood which is the young heartworm. There are changes in his lungs that are secondary to the heartworm disease.

Hey friends. Update for you all. Today was Montys appoinment for the second attempt to get blood and chest x-rays done. They had given us 3 pills to give to Monty 2 hrs before his appoinment to try and settle him enough to get what they needed....the pills werent enough so they took a risk and fully sedated him. This was risky because we have not yet seen what condition his heart is in from the damage the worms have caused, and giving him injectable sedation could have possibly put him in heart failure. All went well and they got the blood specimens and chest x-rays we desperately need, to see how we will proceed. Todays bill $700. We will have results for x-ray images and blood work for kidney and liver functions by Monday. Please friends, family, strangers, dog lovers please continue to share and keep Monty in your prayers for me thats all I ask. Anything else is more than i can be thankful for... Thank you

Hello friends. Yesterday was our appointment at the vet for Monty to have his blood drawn and tested to check his kidney and liver functions and also get chest x-rays to see if there are any signs of an enlarged heart or damage to his lungs. We explained to the vet that he is very thirsty all the time, we often fill up his water and he pants and breaths very heavily, even at rest. He isn't as active as he was a year ago.

Fast forward to them taking him in the back to have his blood taken. My dad and I hear from the exam room Monty screaming bloody murder, howling at the top of his very hurt sounding lungs. We felt bad and the tech walks in the exam room and tells us that was them just trying to shave his fur down a little to draw the actual blood. Two attempts and they said he had enough and they couldn't continue as the worms in his heart are responsive to great stresses put on it. Just to much for him. We set up another appointment for next week to try again and this time they gave us some pills we have to give him 2 hours before his appointment that will hopefully take the edge off enough to allow the techs to do there jobs safely while keeping Monty safe. I will continue to keep you guys posted until then please share this page with all your friends and family. I appreciate the help guys!
