My name is Monifa Maat, I am a certified fitness instructor and Corrective Exercise Specialist, author, nutrition and food activist and member of Mother African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.

I created the Healthy Roots Fitness & Nutrition Camp because I've seen the impact that chronic disease has on our communities, particularly urban communities of color. I wanted to devise a way to bring families together to learn fitness and nutrition habits that would better their health and lifestyle based on my wellness series "52 Can Do's Healthy Lifestyle Solutions for Each Week of the Year. What better place to begin than in the church?

I am raising money to offer year round free fitness and nutrition/wellness workshops for Mother AME Zion congregation and community bringing in the best of the best in talent and expertise to inspire and enlighten the community on how to live better.

Budget includes Program management, 3 Trainers, Workshop Facilitators (4 2-hour sessions), and Fitness equipment including audio-visual, food, and marketing. Program would involve participation of 4 churches, local health and educational institutions, and businesses including bodegas and local supermarkets.

We would want to begin the program in January of 2018 with program preparation beginning in Fall 2017, staffing and recruiting of churches and organizations that will participate.

Praise God, for the past 10 years as Founder of Healthy Roots Fitness & Nutrition Camp we are blessed to announce we have operated twice a year in May and November for total of 8 weeks each year! Often like Jesus made 2 fish and basket of bread feed thousands I and a few members including Doris Rhem, Director of Health Ministry at Mother AME Zion Church would always make a little bit stretch far and wide to provide healthy sustenance.

We now seek to expand to include 3 more churches and recruit fitness trainers to provide group fitness classes and facilitators to offer informative wellness information in an entertaining format.

Now that we have increased resources in terms of church space, and access to fitness expertise including a medical doctor that will aid in overseeing the evaluation of the program from medical/health perspective we are ready to show how HRFNC will contribute to better health outcomes in reducing the incidence and impact of chronic disease – diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis in our communities.

Every penny that is given in the effort to better the health of residents in Central Harlem community will be accounted for with published reports on exactly how the money was spent which will go towards hiring excellent, experienced certified trainers, healthy, delicious food, expert wellness workshop facilitators, program equipment (mats, weights, bands, audio/visual equipment, handouts), marketing for total participation of 4 faith based institutions, their constituents and local community.

Won’t you please help and see immediately the impact of your gift on the lives of others.
