My mom is Renee Williamson. She is 50 years old, and lives in Colonial Heights, VA. She has brain cancer.
For as far back as I can remember, my mom has been the most hard working, strongest woman I know. My younger brother, Jacob, was born with Autism. My mom gave up her career in order to be able to spend more time with my brother and I. She started cleaning houses by herself so she could set her own schedule while still contributing to the money our dad made. This way she could also spend time with my brother and I, taking us to and from school everyday.
She worked so hard helping my Autistic brother. Doctors wanted to put him on ton of different medicines to make life easier on the family due to some of his behaviors. My mom always said, “He doesn’t need drugs, he needs my help controlling his behaviors and learning.” Today Jacob is 18 years old, on no medicines, mainstreamed in his senior year of high school, and working a part time job.
In 2010, my mom bravely set out on her own and divorced my dad. She knew it would be a rough road financially, but it was best for us. She has told me that she worried she would never be able to make a significant amount of money since she spent so long just cleaning homes; however, she landed a part time job as an office assistant. After only a few months, the company offered her the position of office manager. I remember her struggling to learn about computer programs and accounting in her late 40s, but she stayed late, went in on weekends, and taught herself. My mom seemed so happy at this job, and I was proud of her. She was making it on her own, we were happy, and she was even able to pay for most of my college by herself.
In May of this year (2017) my mom got a severe headache, and was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme. It is a devastating cancer, and the prognosis is awful. This has shaken our family to its core.
Back in the first week of May, my mom received a job offer from a company with a better income and the opportunity to advance and grow. She was so excited, and accepted this new job. Going into the third week of employment here is when she was struck with this tumor. Now she is unable to work. Since she was only at this new job for a short time, she will now have to start paying a large monthly COBRA payment to make sure she can keep her health care.
My family desperately needs help at this time. My mom is struggling to pay basic household bills as well as the countless hospital bills and medical treatment fees. ANY amount is genuinely appreciated and will go directly towards helping my mom fight this cancer.
