Lisa vs. Leukemia

As some of you may already know my mom Lisa was diagnosed with an aggressive form of AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) around Christmas of 2017.  Although we had a lot ahead of us we were ready to fight a good fight.  She is TOUGH.

AML is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow that primarily affects white blood cells. AML occurs when myeloid stem cells become a type of immature white blood cell called myeloblasts.  Myeloblasts are abnormal and do not become healthy white blood cells.

After being hospitalized for her induction round of chemotherapy immediately after diagnosis--she unfortunately went into a rapid and acute respiratory failure within a few weeks of diagnosis.   She went into a rapid decline that left her holding on to life by a thread for 6 weeks in a medically induced coma. We were told at that time that she would never wake and we would unfortunately have to make arrangements for her passing.

Within 24 hours of the devastating news--she miraculously began to take a turn in the right direction.  We got the positive news that her leukemia was in remission and her body was fighting hard to recover.  This meant that she was now a candidate for a bone marrow transplant--her only shot at survival.  She spent the next 3 months tirelessly learning to walk, talk, and eat on her own again in preparation for the transplant.

We found a donor for transplant in June.  A 23 year old male from Texas who was a 100% match.  A match like this is rare and a diamond in the rough.  This increased her chances of accepting the transplant and increasing her odds of survival.

Her transplant was scheduled to take place September 5th.  The day after labor day.

After a brief stint in the hospital this week due to weak pulmonary function--we found out that her latest biopsy showed that the leukemia has returned.  Unfortunately, this means that the transplant is now cancelled and there are no other treatments available for her AML mutation.  It has returned quickly and aggressively.  She likely has a few weeks at most before the disease will take her life.

We will begin hospice and palliative care immediately to ensure she is comfortable and is able to go at peace surrounded by those she loves when ready.

She isn't one to ask for help so I am here to be her voice when she is too weak to speak for herself.  The end of life care and funeral expenses are lofty as you know and any little bit will help.  If we have any extra funds in addition to what is needed to cover these expenses--we will be making a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Mom found peace with the news.  We will always remember her as the funny, silly, giving woman she always was.

Love you mom.  Always my best friend. xoxo

It is with great sadness to say that my mom passed away peacefully last night in her sleep with my brother by her side. Quicker than we imagined but exactly how she wanted to go. She is comfortable, at peace, and no longer suffering. She is smiling again. I hope she knows she was my best friend and I will forever miss her wisdom and advice. Thank you all for your kind words, stories, prayers, and donations. It is greatly appreciated. We read your messages with her yesterday so she knew how much she meant to so many people. I will always have a void in my heart without her here. She’s so missed already. Love you mom! Look over us. Xoxo
