Awesome Romer needs our help!

Romer came into rescue from a S IL kill shelter.  We had received an email from the shelter pleading for a rescue to pull this boy as his time was up, meaning he was scheduled to be euthanized just because no one claimed him after 7 days.  The shelter stated "he is too great of a dog to let die".  His picture broke our heart, so we decided to pull him.

We were expecting Romer to be a Coonhound, about 60lbs.  When we got to transport to pick him up, the driver asked us if we were ready for our 'mini horse'.  We were confused, until the doors opened.

Romer came galloping out of his crate.  He was 73lbs, but was an emaciated 73lbs.  He should actually weigh about 100lbs!  Every rib was visible and his hip bones stuck out.  His joints were all swollen and red.  You could tell he just hurt with every movement.  His skin had bare spots - skin infection.  All this was just what we could see..... his bloodwork revealed a whole bunch of other medical issues.   He is hookworm and lungworm positive.  He is also heartworm positive and eventually will need to be neutered.  

We believe that Romer probably spent his life on a concrete slab and thus his joints are very inflamed.  When he got to his foster home, he walked over to the bed of blankets and gently walked on them and then flopped himself down.  After letting out a deep sigh, in a mere few seconds he was sound asleep.  

Romer had been treated a few times so far for the hookworm and lungworm.  He started heartworm treatment last week and will hopefully finish up at the end of Aug. 

Romer is an awesome boy.  He is a kind, calm, gentle soul.  He is good with other dogs.  He has a long road of recovery ahead of him, but we are happy that he is part of our rescue and safe.
