The Short Story
The Modesto Filmmaker Boot Camp is a summer program started in summer 2018 by ReTold Productions as a way for students to learn the basics of filmmaking at an accessible price. We sold out all 20 spots a month before the camp launch date and it proved to us that not only is this program wanted, it is in demand!
We want to offer more of these camps and expand it to new heights- including offering a new workshop that focuses on Narrative Short Films. In order to do that, we need your help.
Filmmaking programs are rare because they are expensive. The cost of equipment is the biggest hurdle. We want the program to be running at 100% as soon as next year, the only way we can get there that fast is if you lend a hand.
Where We Want To Go
The Boot Camp is exactly what it sounds like- a fast-paced, intense 5 day camp that teaches the bare bones, the basics of filmmaking. The camp is too quick to teach students how to write scripts or edit films themselves. After these young filmmakers take that first step , the next is the Advanced Workshop.
The Advanced Workshop: In this two week workshop, filmmakers will learn how to analyze films, write their own scripts, film their movies, and then edit the films themselves. In this program the students will deep dive into different jobs and help them find their niche, what they excel in. They'll work with actors, learn to direct, discover the different options for getting great sound and learn the best tips and tricks for making their edits more efficient.
How We Can Get There
The Advanced Workshop was the original idea for the program but we couldn't accomplish it this first year due to budget restraints. Now that we have developed the Filmmaker Boot Camp we want to keep striving to create the Advanced Workshop.
The main thing we need is equipment. Editing software is powerful and requires an equally powerful computer to handle it. Our main priority is getting four good laptops for the students to use to edit on. That right there is going to run up a tab of roughly $5000 for the laptops, hard drives, Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions and mice. If we reach this goal, then the laptops will definitely be a part of the workshop and give the students a chance to learn arguably the most technical aspect of filmmaking.
Our stretch goal is to upgrade some of the equipment. We want to get the students great microphones, boom poles, audio recorders, camera cages, lighting kits and external monitors. To achieve this, we will need an additional $4000 to get the adequate gear. With these set ups, the students will be ready to make almost anything.
How You Can Help
It takes a village to raise a child and it takes a community to raise a filmmaker. We cannot do this without the help of as many people as possible. If you contribute even one dollar, that is getting us closer to our goal of enriching the lives of Modesto area students.

$100 PRODUCER CREDIT: Your name will scroll by under the Producer category of the credits so you can know that your contribution was a key part in the program getting funded.
$500 SPONSOR CREDIT: You will be one of our official sponsors and have your business or service logo shown on the big screen and get a shout out during our finales next year! This is a major step to helping the program succeed and we very much appreciate it!
$1500 PROMOTIONAL VIDEO: Have a small business or provide services? At this level of contribution you have just paid for one 2 minute or less promotional video for you or your company made by Andrew Wong, the creator of the FBC. You'll be treated like any other client, get a gorgeous video for your business and you'll know that your contribution has gone to a fantastic program!
