MKC stands for Make Kids Classrooms

MKC really stands for Mirembe Kibumbiro Cornerstone Primary School (in Kampala, Uganda).

Hi,

My name is Liz and in the past five years I’ve been working with a primary school in Uganda that desperately needs new classrooms. We're raising $75,000 to build five new classrooms. The plans are in place and all approved. We just need the money to make the dream a reality for more than 300 primary school kids.

A Little Bit About Me
In 2013, while on a visit to Uganda, I felt a sense of belonging as had never happened before. I am both Australian and Ugandan. I was born in Paris and my formative years were spent in Kenya and then Australia. During my teenage years, I spent three years in Uganda at a boarding girls’ school.

The Primary School
One of the projects that captured my heart in Uganda is a primary school in Kibumbiro. With some managerial experience but little in the way of running a school, in 2013 I found myself responsible for the education of over 300 determined children and their equally resilient families.

Introducing Chess
At the time of filming the Disney movie Queen of Katwe, based on Ugandan chess champion Phiona Mutesi, we fortuitously met her coach Robert Katende.

Robert visited our school at his own cost and helped us start a chess club. He connected us to the Annual Schools Chess Championships – where for the past three years our children have won several medals including gold.

Why New Classrooms
One area that needs massive improvement is the school building. Nursery classes are in a permanent building but the primary school is in a rudimentary, semi-permanent structure which is in urgent need of being replaced with new classrooms.

We believe children deserve to have quality classrooms to match the quality education we’re also in the process of developing. We would not be able to build these classrooms without assistance beyond the school’s community.

The Dream
It is our dream to have children arriving for the start of the new year in 2019 with a new attitude, and new uniforms, to new classrooms for a bright new future.
