Help Miumiu Breathe - Urgent

Donation protected
UPDATE:Just received a call from the hospital. Miumiu is not doing very well. She has had "panic attacks" and burst of movements which made her permanent tap came loose. She still has liquid in her pleural cavity and at this moment, we have decided to hold off with the drain until we get the results from the liquid test which could be in a few hours. If Miumiu breathes at an acceptable level we will leave her in the oxygen incubator until the results came but if her breathing deteriorates they will but the drain back immediately. The bill is now surpassed $3000 already with tax which was not expected 24 hours ago with the sedation and extra stuff they already did. I really want to keep her around until the results came and I hope you can please share my post. Thank you so much.

Hi! My name is Yemina. I am from Richmond BC and now I'm studying at McGill University. Two years ago I met Miumiu, an 8-month-old cat found in the streets of Montreal and was temporarily fostered at my friend's place. I fell in love with her immediately and I called the adoption centre to know more about her. Miumiu was found outside with other cats while the volunteers are feeding the homeless animals and miumiu followed her a long way and the volunteer decided to take her to an animal adoption centre.  My friend was fostering her with other kittens but they were not getting along so my roommate was helping to foster miumiu. I adopted her after discussing with my family!
She is an active and curious cat! She greets everyone who comes to my place and she constantly looks at the door to wait for me to come home every day. She love playing with feathers and will respond and come to me when I whistle!
I realized that her appetite has gone down in the last two weeks. I have always been giving her canned food with water and dry food every day for protein. She started to drink and eat less up to a point (2 days ago) she started to stop eating! I was worried and I tried changing the diet but she refused to eat even her favourite treat! I also noticed that she stopped defecating for 3/4 days so I called the emergency vet center (because it was 12 am midnight). I explained her situation and the receptionist asked if I noticed her with a difficulty in breathing or breathing with mouth opened. I then realized that she has been breathing with mouth opened for a few days already but I thought it was a normal or just a minor problem. I quickly sent her to the emergency vet centre in South Shore.

I originally thought it was a digestion problem, maybe severe constipation. But actually, it was a lot worse! She has "Pleural Effusion", a condition with liquid accumulating in the pleural cavity. She was placed in the oxygen incubator immediately because she had a hard time breathing and she has thoracentesis (pleural tap) done immediately to remove the excess liquid surrounding her lungs. I was watching her the whole time and there was 230cc of liquid drained! That is A LOT of liquid for a cat! I soon realized the severity of her situation and the cost of the procedure that needed to be done for her.

I was in utter shock at 3 am in the hospital facing the bill and possible cost of her treatments. My friend has borrowed $500 to me so I can pay the deposit and Miumiu can stay in the hospital for the night.

The vet told me that she needed a complete test for the liquid that was drained, blood test, and ultrasounds and scans to know exactly what was the cause so they can treat her properly.

At 5 am I visited Miumiu after the vet has re-checked her condition and I was told a bad news. Her liquid has re-accumulated and her blood pressure was very low and her heart rate was slow and ECG was not normal.  I was told that her condition was so bad that she might not make it.

I was completely shattered by this news and I was facing the choice of euthanasia after 5 hours in the animal hospital.

At 7 am I decided to talk to the specialist even if it costs $160 because I want to make sure I am making the right decision. I ended up talking to another general vet, Dr. Roy, for the day shift and she has explained the situation much clearer.

Dr. Roy has listed 5 possibilities for her situation. Bacterial infection (pyothorax), Cardiogenic, chylothorax, tumour/cancer, or FIP. We are treating it as a bacterial infection because I did not have the money to do the proper diagnosis for her like cardiac echography, abdominal echography, liquid test, blood work, etc... so I just assumed and hoped it's an infection.  The night I spent at the vet costs me over $1000 on its own. Currently, Miumiu is on high dose antibiotics and is still in the oxygen incubator with IV drip because she is still not eating.

Here is the breakdown of the cost (plus 15% tax) (picture of the bill is below in the Chinese section)
Emergency consultation- $138 (once)
IV catheter - $87 once
Pleural tap (thoracocentesis) - $264 each time
Intensive care - $165 per day
Oxygen - 174.96 per 24 hours
Sedation - $44 each time
fluid cytology - $180 (once)
Thoracic drain with sedation and X-ray - $276
IV fluid - $61 per day
Injections - $92 per day
Drain monitoring - $80 per day

Currently NOT doing because of the lack of funding:
Blood test plus drawing blood - $231
Cardiac echology - $390
Abdominal echology - $430
Internal medicine specialist - $148

POSSIBLE cost for treatments if it's not bacterial infection:
Surgery - $4000 to$5000 (ligation of thoracic canal, pericardiectomy
Chemotherapy - (not sure until tomorrow)
heart medications - (not sure until tomorrow)

I am now fundraising for the cost of her proper diagnosis and for her intensive care at the vet and possible cost for her treatments. For now every day at the hospital costs me around $1000 dollars and as a student, this is a great burden on me and my family. She might need to stay for at least 4 days for the antibiotics to work. I want to give her a last chance before I give up!

Miumiu is a lovely two and a half-year-old cat and we hope she will be cured and can live with me for much longer. She is my first pet and she means a lot to us.

The money raised will be used in her diagnosis and treatments. Thank you for your amazing support! It means a lot for me and Miumiu.
