Mirage Realms Server Upgrade

Mirage Realms is a free cross platform 2D MMORPG for PC and Android that has been in development now for around 3 years. Over this time the game has gone from a none-functioning tech-demo to something played by thousands of people every day!

At the start of the games life, it ran on a first generation Intel NUC in my friends house and would lag with around 100 players online, or every Wednesday night when he would go on wow raids with his guild. After a while it became rare to ever see less than 100 players on, so an upgrade was needed!

It was on this site as a community we managed to raise £500 to build a small 1u server running an i3-4160 from new and scavenged parts. To this very day that server has been running 24/7, and once again we have hit a point where it simply cannot cope with the volume of players (around 500 at peak times!!!). My plan had been to leverage an in-game donation system using paypal to accumulate funds to upgrade stuff like this as we went, but I unfortunately fell victim to a flaw in how paypal handles "non tangible goods" and some brazilian scammers. In the end it cost me more than was ever donated.

At the end of may I am going to purchase a new server for Mirage, I am looking at something significantly better suited, while trying to keep the monthly data centre cost down. I am aiming to bring paid features into the game at some point in the next few months, but we are having performance issues every day right now and I want to do something about it. The new servers specifications are as follows:

- Intel Xeon E-2136, 6 Core, 3.3GHz, 12MB Cache, 8GT/s, 71Watts
- 16GB DDR4 2666MHz ECC UDIMM Module
- 1 x Intel DC P4101 512GB M.2 NVME, 219K Read IOPS, 11.4K Write IOPS

What does that mean? Well, the current processor is only dual core, so with hyperthreading it only processes 4 threads at a time. This new processor will handle 12 threads at once (the server is highly threaded) which is a really big bonus. In addition, the current processor's base clock speed is 3.5ghz which is .2 higher, however the new processor can turboboost up to 4.5ghz which means when it needs to, it will blows the old one out of the water. The new ram is DDR4 which is nearly twice as fast, and the NVME storage drive is much faster than the Sata SSD we are currently using, which will really help with the database reads and writes. It is a massive upgrade!

If you like the way things are going and you would like to help out with the project, this is a straight forward way to help me out with providing a better service while investing in the game itself and hopefully benefiting directly with less lags as a result.

Should we hit the result, I will trigger 2 weeks of in-game events to celebrate and see how the new hardware fairs once it is up and running :)
