Cape Breton's Miners Museum Repairs

Donation protected

Cape Breton is considered one of the most scenic destinations in the world—and for incredible reasons at each and every turn.

One of those reasons is the Miners Museum in the town of Glace Bay.

Built in 1967 as part of Canada’s centennial celebrations, the museum’s interior and exterior are in need of $1.5 million in repairs over the next seven years, said Mary Pat Mombourquette, executive director.

However, the architect's report is clear and so is Mary Pat that $265,000 is required immediately to keep the Museum running smoothly and safely. So, we are starting with $265,000 as a goal.

Here is the story in the Halifax newspaper.

In a recent article it was said, “I’m not expecting them [governments] to cover all the costs,” Mombourquette said in an interview earlier Tuesday. “I would like to see the three levels of government work together with the museum to create a viable museum for the next 50 years.”

It would be great if all levels of government came through with funding right away for must-do items — such as tower ventilation, heating and ventilation systems, exterior walls and some lighting, all of which need to be done right away — which are estimated to cost about $265,000. However, that is not likely.

And, with government purse strings tight, the likelihood of $1.5 million is not likely at all.

So, I'm asking you, whether you've visited our beautiful island or are a resident, to contribute to a fund to fix one of Cape Breton's treasures, the Miners Museum.

Our  goal is for $265,000 and the stretch goal is for the full $1.5 million.

My name is Andre Mazerolle. I grew up in Glace Bay a 10 minute walk from a coal mine. Visiting my aunt, I could see the Miners Museum from her driveway. It is an essential part of the economy in Glace Bay. I would hate to see another fire ravage it because of faulty systems, or for someone to get hurt simply visiting or working there.

I now live outside of Toronto but the home of my heart is Cape Breton. Lend a hand and let's keep the Miners Museum open, safe and amazing.
