To my friends, loved ones and comrades who stand in solidarity with dreamers, and also to the haters who threaten our peaceful existence in the United States,
I am overjoyed to share with you all my recent acceptance to Bard College graduate MFA program for Film and Video.
I'm speaking as one of 11 million undocumented immigrants residing in the US. I was brought here when I was 5 and for the past 23 years I have walked, talked, learned, played ball, consumed TV, befriended, dated, lived and worked alongside Americans oblivious to the antisocial exclusions that documentation imposes on their neighbors. Out of the 11 million undocumented, I am one of the 2 million in the generation that politicians patronizingly label as “Dreamers” and out of those Dreamers I am of the small but mighty 5-10% pursuing higher education.
I must mention that I do not have a bachelors degree which makes this acceptence into graduate school that much more triumphant over these odds. Last fall, I took a huge risk and spent the money set aside to renew my DACA on grad school applications. I am constantly aware of the daily threat of deportation but I refuse to live invisibly any longer.
I am asking for your contribution because this opportunity is a crucial step to my advancement as an educated cultural producer. My mission here is to contribute to the restructuring of the undocumented narrative and to be amongst the generation of brave dreamers who are paving the way and occupying the institutions that have historically excluded our voices and imaginations. Earning an MFA at one of Americas most prestigious art programs will help me in my pursuit to reclaim basic socioeconomic privileges, and to navigate our society with digitity.
Because federal financial aid and student loans are unavailable to undocumented immigrants, and because I'm part of an undocumented family who don't have the means to help, I face a daunting $25,000 yearly tuition for the next 3 years. It's an amount I cannot thinkably shoulder on the shoestring budget that gets me by each month. I am putting faith in the citizens that surround me in my community and on the internet in hopes that you will invest in the potential of my creativity.
