Mike has spent the majority of his adult life putting the needs of others over his own by raising over $150,000 for the MS Society; organizing reunions; audio and video recorded performances, raised funds and created multiple forms of media for the John Hersey High School Band, just to name a few.
While dedicating himself to others, Mike has also been dealing with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis which is a very debilitating form of MS. Mike is a proud father to two grown daughters who have provided love and support throughout the years, but his deteriorating health has caused them to become more caregivers rather than simply enjoying time with their dad.
Today Mike is confined to his bed or a wheelchair. He rarely leaves his apartment, has MS fatigue, no use of his legs and severely diminished use of his hands which has made him unable to work. He currently has a state funded personal aide helping him from 4–8 hours a day. He continually needs to purchase medical equipment to help him do basic tasks that we all take for granted. The costs for goods and services continue to mount and insurance only covers a fraction and sometimes covers nothing at all. His monthly expenses are $860 higher than his disability income, so his savings account is being depleted each month. He is actively taking steps to decrease his expenses wherever possible, but at this rate, will be out of savings within 6 months.
Mike rarely asks for much, but he needs help now more than ever. Independent living is not easy for Mike, but it is highly coveted. At some point, Mike's condition will force him to lose his independence. Until that time, we are looking to raise funds to help Mike afford independent living for as long as possible.
